The Navy Midshipmen begin their quest for a 17th Commander-In-Chief's Trophy when they visit the Air Force Falcons on Saturday in the first leg of the annual series. Navy (1-2) has captured the trophy 11 times in the last 19 years to pull within four of the Falcons, who rank first among the three U.S. Military Academies with 20 awards. Army has won the trophy nine times while it has been shared on five occasions. The Midshipmen are looking to snap their four-game road losing streak against Air Force (3-1), which posted a 40-7 victory when it most recently hosted the matchup in 2020.
Kickoff at Falcon Stadium in Colorado Springs, Col. is set for noon ET. Why Air Force can cover
The Falcons lead the nation in rushing with an average of 412.3 yards after gaining 461 against the Wolf Pack. Senior Brad Roberts had a huge game, posting his third 100-yard performance in four games this season with 123 while recording three rushing touchdowns for the second time. Roberts is third in the country with seven TDs on the ground and ninth with 465 rushing yards.
John Lee Eldridge III also was a big contributor as he reached triple digits for the second straight week with 102 yards on only eight carries. The junior has run for at least 85 yards in each of his four outings this year and is averaging 10.2 on 37 attempts. The Falcons had just one completion on three pass attempts versus Nevada, but it was a big one as backup quarterback Ben Brittain connected with senior wide receiver David Cormier for an 80-yard touchdown.
Why Navy can cover
The Midshipmen have performed well away from home of late, winning three of their last four road games as well as a neutral-site contest that concluded the 2021 season. They recorded their first victory of 2022 last week at East Carolina, outlasting the Pirates 23-20 in double overtime. Navy rushed for 191 yards in the triumph, with Maquel Haywood gaining 67 on 13 carries and fellow sophomore Anton Hall Jr. recording 57 and a touchdown on 22 attempts.
Junior quarterback Tai Lavatai, who has yet to throw an interception this season, completed 7-of-10 pass attempts for a career-high 152 yards and a TD. Vincent Terrell Jr. was Lavatai's main target as he made three catches for 114 yards, with 65 coming on a scoring pass in the fourth quarter. The Midshipmen are capable of keeping Air Force's top-ranked ground attack in check as they are fifth in the nation in rushing defense with an average of 69 yards allowed per contest.
