Why Liberty can cover

Liberty has a stout run defense. The Flames give up just 144.1 rushing yards per game and allow opponents to average 3.8 yards per carry. Junior linebacker Mike Smith Jr. is able to dissect the play in a hurry and fill gaps. Smith Jr. leads the team in total tackles (69) with four pass deflections and two forced fumbles. He's finished with at least six stops in six different outings.

The Flames have a few players who can generate pressure up front. They have six players with at least four sacks on the year. Senior defensive lineman Durrell Johnson leads the pack with eight sacks. Johnson runs with an excellent motor and has a fantastic spin move. The Maryland native has the speed and flexibility to beat his man around the edge. On Nov. 19, he secured four tackles and a sack.

Why Toledo can cover

Toledo played solid all year long. The Rockets have athletic and alert defenders on all three levels, ranking third in the MAC in scoring defense (25.5) and first in total defense (331.8) and pass defense (185.5). Sophomore cornerback Quinyon Mitchell has outstanding awareness and ball skills. Mitchell is aggressive at the catch point, leading the nation in pass deflections (19) and tied for eighth in interceptions (5). He's logged two-plus pass breakups in six games.

Junior linebacker Dallas Gant is an impactful defender. He's ferocious against the run and very agile in coverage. Gant has a good feel for angles to collapse on the ball carrier. The Ohio native leads the team in total tackles (112) with five pass breakups and two forced fumbles. He's wrapped up 10-plus tackles in five different matchups. In the MAC Championship, Gant had 10 total stops.
