June 30, 2006 The San Antonio Silver Stars look to end their longest losing streak of the season and capture a rare victory at Madison Square Garden when they visit the New York Liberty on Friday. Following a 63-59 loss to Detroit on Tuesday, the Silver Stars have lost four in a row, their longest skid since losing nine straight to end last season. San Antonio (6-8) has had it tougher when visiting New York. The Silver Stars have just one win at Madison Square Garden - on July 22, 1997 - during the inaugural WNBA season when they were known as the Utah Starzz. Since then, the Silver Stars, who moved from Utah before the 2003 season, have lost seven straight in New York and are 1-8 on the road all-time against the Liberty. New York (4-10) has won 11 of its last 13 games overall against the Silver Stars, including a 71-67 win June 10 in San Antonio. The win over San Antonio gave the Liberty their first road victory of the season. Becky Hammon scored 23 points as New York led for most of the game. San Antonio guard Vickie Johnson, who played nine years with the Liberty and has played in 296 career games, most in WNBA history, scored 15 points against her former team. "Vickie is very smart and crafty," Hammon said of the Liberty's all-time leading scorer. "She has the will to win as much as anyone I have ever seen. But we set the tempo and had good execution all night." Johnson has averaged 12.5 points in eight road games. Since starting 5-0 on the road, the Silver Stars have lost three straight away from home. Yet that mark is still better than their 1-5 home mark after Tuesday's defeat to Detroit. The Silver Stars trailed by one point with 18 seconds left, but missed two 3-point attempts. Reserve forward La Toya Thomas, the first overall pick in the 2003 draft, did not play after tearing her lateral meniscus tendon in her left knee in Sunday's 105-80 loss to Los Angeles. Thomas, who is still on the active list, was averaging 9.0 points and 4.9 rebounds. New York lost 73-67 to Charlotte on Tuesday night, ending its modest two-game win streak. The Liberty fell behind by 15 points early and weren't able to overcome the large deficit. "You had to feel good that you were able to come back and regain the lead on your home court," Hammon said. "You'd think you'd have the momentum." The Liberty matched a franchise low at home with 16 first-half points, originally established June 30, 2002, against Portland. "We did a great job of coming back, working real hard and fighting back," said Cathrine Kraayeveld, who scored a career-high 18 points. "We just have to keep buckling down. We had the lead toward the end and gave them some easy buckets." New York concludes its three-game homestand July 6 against Sacramento. |
