Oct. 7, 2006 BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. -- Joseph Ngwenya had a goal and two assists Saturday night in leading the Columbus Crew to a 4-1 victory over the Chicago Fire. Chicago (12-11-8) took a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute when Chris Armas beat Crew defender Marcos Gonzalez and sent the ball to Chris Rolfe at the top of the box. He blasted it past Crew goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum, who was making his first start after breaking a hand on May 19. Columbus (8-14-9) tied it in the 26th minute. Ngwenya passed to Jason Garey, who tapped the ball to Eddie Gaven. He rocketed it past Fire keeper Matt Pickens. In the 48th minute, Garey gave the Crew a 2-1 lead on a goal assisted by Ngwenya and Ned Grabavoy. The Crew added another in the 77th minute when Ricardo Virtuoso made a run up the center of the field and shot into the bottom right corner of the net for a 3-1 lead. Ngwenya added his goal in the 81st minute by knocking in a rebound. The four goals were the most given up by the Fire this season. The Crew's Marcos Gonzalez left the game in the 20th minute with a right ankle sprain, and Ritchie Kotschau left in the 39th minute after a collision with Chicago's Nate Jaqua resulted in a left shin contusion. Chicago, the third seed in the Eastern Conference, wraps up the regular season with a match at D.C. United next Sunday. The Crew have been eliminated and finish up at New England Saturday. |
