April 29, 2006 COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Josh Wolff scored his first goal of the season, leading the Kansas City Wizards to a 1-0 victory over the Columbus Crew on Saturday night. Wolff's goal in the 74th minute lifted the Wizards (4-1-0) to first place in the Eastern Conference following D.C. United's tie with FC Dallas. Columbus fell to 1-3-1. Kansas City midfielder Sasha Victorine led Wolff with a pass inside the Columbus penalty area that Wolff redirected past goalkeeper Jon Busch from nine yards. Wolff nearly scored in the 23rd minute when he tried to chip the ball over Busch's head but missed wide left. Columbus forward Sebastian Rozental attempted a similar shot in the 28th minute, but the ball was gathered easily by Wizards goaltender Bo Oshoniyi. Rozental tested Oshoniyi again in the 36th minute with a long, rolling shot that Oshoniyi stopped. The Crew's recent injury woes continued when striker Eddie Gaven was helped off the field early in the first half with a severe left ankle sprain. Starter Chad Marshall was injured during practice Friday and judged unfit to play shortly before game time. Jacob Thomas and Marcos Gonzalez were injured during the Crew's match against the Los Angeles Galaxy on April 22. The Wizards narrowly avoided gifting a goal to Columbus when defender Shavar Thomas awkwardly redirected a pass that Oshoniyi deflected to the left of his own goalpost in the 67th minute. The Crew were held scoreless for the first time this season, but have scored only four goals in their first five games under new head coach Sigi Schmid. |
