Power Rankings: B's come out of the gate with Z's

Updated Oct. 13

It's probably a good thing the Boston Bruins are getting away for a few days right now.

Only two weeks into the season, the defending regular season conference champions already look like they need a change of scenery to regroup and the first road trip of the season offers a chance to do that. The timing is good too since the local spotlight of disappointment is more focused on the Red Sox and Patriots these days. That's really a break for the Bruins who have been just as disappointing.

It wasn't supposed to be this way, of course, for a team many believe can win the Stanley Cup. Boston even got a chance to shoot out of the gate by starting the season with a five-game home stand, but failed to take advantage, posting a 2-3 record. Truth is the Bruins played well in only one of the games, getting a second win thanks to a late comeback against the bottom-feeding New York Islanders.

Coach Claude Julien has talked about mental mistakes and bad decisions overshadowing some good efforts, which in coach speak is one way of saying players are believing too much of their own hype. Boston certainly has one of the more-talented lineups in the league and worked hard enough to become a powerhouse last season, but so far the Bruins have been reluctant to really compete in most games. And the tepid effort level has been most apparent in special-team play. Boston's power play has connected only four times in 29 chances so far and the penalty killers have given up eight goals in 26 tries.

Normally a team looks to its leaders to change the dynamics, but so far Vezina Trophy winner Tim Thomas is sporting an ugly .868 save percentage, while Norris Trophy winner Zdeno Chara has only two assists so far and a minus-1 rating. Of course, there have been encouraging performances from forwards Marc Savard, Michael Ryder and Steve Begin, but for the most part the Bruins have played like they are entitled to something.

They're not and maybe being away will help change that. The Bruins have too good a team not to turn things around, but they may end up digging themselves a big hole that will be tough to climb out of.

Here are this week's rankings:

Power Rankings
CurrentTeamPrevious
1Capitals · Trends1
Jose Theodore is playing his best hockey since joining the Caps. He has won 10 starts in a row despite facing more than 35 shots in each game.
2Sharks · Trends2
San Jose is riding an eight-game winning streak on the road, where it has league's best record.
3Kings · Trends6
They get ahead and put things away. The Kings are 22-0 this season when taking a lead into the third period.
4Blackhawks · Trends3
Chicago's power play has been struggling lately, connecting only once in 22 tries in the past seven games.
5Senators · Trends5
Ottawa did not allow more than two goals in a game during its 11-game winning streak, outscoring opponents 37-13.
6Canucks · Trends4
Mason Raymond already has scored more goals this season than in his first two combined.
7Coyotes · Trends8
Despite its problems scoring on the power play, Phoenix needs only one more win to match last season's total.
8Devils · Trends10
Is the addition of Ilya Kovalchuk the ticket out of a very winnable Eastern Conference?
9Sabres · Trends7
Only two wins in their past 10 games has put the Northeast title in jeopardy for the Sabres.
10Penguins · Trends9
Sid's still scoring on a regular basis, but the defending Cup champs look vulnerable in their back end.
11Avalanche · Trends11
With Matt Duchene leading the way, Avs rookies have put up 114 points this season.
12Lightning · Trends26
Stability looks to be coming with an ownership change and maybe a playoff spot, too, thanks to seven wins in their past 10 games.
13Flyers · Trends12
Struggling to bury shots lately. Philly had 72 of them in the past two games, but both were losses because the Flyers scored only once.
14Ducks · Trends14
The Ducks aren't doing it against Pacific Division rivals this season with only three wins in 17 games.
15Flames · Trends15
Jarome Iginla has scored only four goals in 2010 and none so far in February.
16Predators · Trends16
Falling fast in the West with only three wins in their past 10 games.
17Red Wings · Trends17
The injury jinx isn't letting up in Detroit with Tomas Holmstrom going down almost as soon as he returned.
18Hurricanes · Trends18
The selloff has officially begun with Niclas Wallin leaving. Ray Whitney is likely to be next.
19Canadiens · Trends20
Jaroslav Halak is starting to take control of the starting goaltending job in Montreal.
20Blues · Trends19
Plenty of pain caused by this offense. The Blues have won only 13 of 28 one-goal decisions, and eight of 25 when the other team scores first.
21Stars · Trends22
Marty Turco is making himself more attractive as the trade deadline approaches. The Stars goalie has stopped 98 of 101 shots in his past three starts.
22Wild · Trends21
The Wild are staying in the playoff hunt because of the way they play at home. Minnesota has picked up points in its past nine games at the Xcel.
23Thrashers · Trends23
Is Kari Lehtonen, just back from his conditioning stint, still the goalie of the future or one of the past?
24Rangers · Trends24
He rarely gets any goal support, so Henrik Lundqvist had to turn back 41 shots to end his personal six-game losing streak.
25Bruins · Trends25
Did you expect that it would take anything less than a shutout to end an ugly 10-game losing streak?
26Panthers · Trends13
Florida's offense has gone missing lately with the Panthers scoring only 12 times in the past 10 games.
27Blue Jackets · Trends28
Change apparently is good for the Jackets, who have won their first two under new coach Claude Noel.
28Islanders · Trends27
The ice might be thinning under coach Scott Gordon as the Islanders have been playing themselves out of the postseason race of late.
29Maple Leafs · Trends29
New Leafs goalie looks like the Giggy of old with shutouts in his first two starts.
30Oilers · Trends30
Ethan Moreau hasn't scored in 33 games, Shawn Horcoff in 15. That helps explain why Edmonton has only 11 goals in its past seven games.

The Philadelphia Flyers most certainly should be ranked 25th.
They have absolutely no goaltending and a ragtag bunch of defenders.  The exception, of course, being Kimmo "Bobby Orr" Timmonen, who would have saved the 2008 ECF series for the Flyers had he played.

Umm, does this guy have any clue?  I mean didn't the Sabres just dismantle the Red Wings?  It wasn't a fluke, they just looked flat out BETTER.  The wings either shouldn't be a top 10 team on this list OR the Sabres should be, one or the other.  I think any team 4 ...(more)

What a very insightful comment, considering that at the time of the writing the Coyotes had only played one home game, which they actually dominated most of the time but just couldn't get the puck in the net, and that one home game was their third game in four nights after returning from Buffalo.  No need to mention those things t ...(more)

Good ranking for them, give em a couple months and they'll be in the top 10 and Deserve it. This is atlanta's last year to convince kovy to stay a thrasher and they put together a offense happy team to help coarse him. Atlanta's only problem this year will be chemistry for the defense b/c alot of them have not been playing together for long and kubinas a new addition, and also the goaltending situ ...(more)

Well, as I predicted, it didn't take Goldstein long to move the Hawks up to where they belong.  He started them at 9, moved them to 6, and now has them about where the should be at 3.  Also, just like I said previously, the Canucks, Flames, & ...(more)

Big Rags fan here and watched them play well against the leafs.  Toronto just quit midway into the 3rd period.  The team showed good energy in back to back games.  I guess they're rank 2nd because that joker Reddan scored last night.

I can rip these rankings apart ALL DAY LONG, but do to certain time constraints I will focus on my biggest issue.  I have watched the Sabres out skate and out play every team they've played this year, including the Canadian's (my favorite team), who beat them even though they were out played for the majority of the game. &nbs ...(more)

By no means am I overly arguing the Habs' low power ranking... 2-3 isnt impressive. But my question is, how is it that 2-3 homestand the B's drop 4 spots, but a 2-3 road trip (including way out NW with 2 games back to back nights) drop the Habs 12 spots?

Is this just another example of Wes watching one game per team each week, and he saw the worst one?

Again, not arguing

I'm sorry, but I just don't agree with Phoenix at 24. They blanked Pittsburgh and San Jose away from Phoenix. Ilya Bryzgalov has been playing really good. I know it's just the first week, but I think they deserve a little better than that.

As a pens fan i am very happy to have them at the top.  so far they have proved that they belong there.  now what i dont get is that the Flyers fell in the rankings and they only lost to the number 1 team in the pens.  now also with that there is only two teams that have 10 points and that is the pens and flyers. so shou ...(more)

OK, so the main story is about the Bruins, who are stuggling.  They are 9th.  The Sabres are 19th, yet they haven't lost in regulation yet and are allowing the fewest shots per game....AND Ryan Miller is p ...(more)

I like how the Sabres actually dropped to 19th this week despite not losing a regulation game.  Maybe last nights 6-2 demolition of the Red Wings will garner them a little more respect, or like, being 1 of only 2 teams without a regulation loss.  It won't, because we don't ...(more)
