Quebec City mayor eyes return of Nordiques to NHL

QUEBEC CITY, Quebec -- The mayor of Quebec City has spoken with the NHL about the possible return of the Nordiques to the NHL.

Mayor Regis Labeaume said Saturday he met with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman along with former Nordiques owner Marcel Aubut. The mayor adds that the talks in New York on Friday were "very profitable, very worthwhile."

Bettman said this month he would consider Quebec City as a possible home to an NHL team if it followed through on plans to build a top arena and if a team were for sale. The Nordiques were sold in 1995 and moved to Denver as the Colorado Avalanche.

Quebec hockey fans are so fickle. Up and down with their support. It took them this long to miss having a team in the NHL. I agree
that the main reason they lost their franchise was that they couldn't support it. The fans had too many other things to do or spend
money on. They had the Stastny Brothers up there along with a number of other great players.  Before we go and do a r

I just can't wait for the battle of Quebec!!!  Too bad the Minnesota Wild are not in the same division with the Black Hawks and Blues.  We have to have our biggest rivalry with a team that is 2,000 miles away and no fans can go to.  That stink ...(more)

Actually, in all likelihood, an arena wouldn't be built in Quebec City quickly enough to accomodate the Coyotes. But in a few years, if the franchise were still struggling as badly as it is now, there's no reason to think the Coyotes wouldn't be among the top candidates to move to Quebec City.

It's nice to know that there may ...(more)

Despite all the conspiracy theorys, Winnepeg and Quebec City left because they couldnt sustain their teams. That has nothing to do with the ability to put fans in their seats. They relocated during the height of the free agency wars when salaries where getting out of control, but the salaries today arent that much smaller. My Oilers were ...(more)

CBS Sports Bloggers,

I'm in graduate school, and I'm doing a report on this very subject.  My premise is centered around modeling the franchise/corporation similar to how the Green Bay Packers franchise is run... with community owners (individuals buying stock).

There are only a couple major firms in Q City, a population of about 700K (which has grown over the last

the profiteer who sold the Nordiques back in 1995. Why is he in the equation?? So they can be sold (and moved) again in 10 yrs at a healthy profit for Mmr Aubut?

Let them buy one of the southern teams like the Thrashers or any team in Florida...they couldn't care less about hockey.   Bring back Hartford Whalers too, they appreciated it more than most of the teams these days as well.
