Power Rankings: Stage set for second-half playoff rush - NHL

With the All-Star Game in the rear view mirror, the trade deadline only six weeks away and as many as a dozen teams still fighting for their playoff lives, the stage has been set for an intense final two months of the season.

"When you get past the All-Star break, things start to get really serious," said Phoenix Coyotes captain Shane Doan, whose club is looking for its first playoff spot since 2002. "This is when you really have to make your push."

For most teams anyway. Five of the six division titles and the Eastern Conference crown have been all but locked up as the schedule gets into its home stretch. But with the New Jersey Devils, New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers running neck and neck all season, it looks like only the Atlantic will go down to the wire before anyone takes hold of the top-three seed that goes with along with first place.

Meanwhile the reigning Stanley Cup Champion Detroit Red Wings have been ramping up their game and narrowing the gap on San Jose for the Western Conference lead since early December. At the other end of the standings in both conferences, several other fights to the finish are shaping for the last two months of the season.

Phoenix, a team beset by some serious financial challenges, is now holding down the fifth spot in the West, but seven teams are within six points of the Coyotes and five are holding games in hand. The picture in the East seems to be a little clearer with six teams comfortably over the playoff cutoff line, but four others, including last year's Stanley Cup finalist, the Pittsburgh Penguins, are battling it out for the final two spots.

Now the real fun begins.
