If the NHL handed out a trophy to its most surprising team, the Vancouver Canucks might be the leading contender right about now. The Canucks start the new week riding a three-game winning streak that has lifted them into first place in the Northwest Division, albeit thanks to having played a couple more games than the competition. Still, a month into the season, it represents quite the turnaround for a team that finished in the basement last season.
What is most interesting about the Canucks so far is that the strong start has not entirely been because of Roberto Luongo's great play in goal. Named captain before the season in an unusual and controversial move by the organization, Luongo has been exceptional most of the time and in a particular zone lately with three shutouts in a row and four in his past six games.
But Vancouver is winning more this season because it has produced the kind of offense few people believed it could. Only two teams have scored more so far than the Canucks. And that's without Pavol Demitra, the free-agent sniper signed last summer but injured a couple of weeks in.
The Canucks are getting contributions throughout the lineup, and have 11 players with at least two goals. The Sedin twins are leading the way offensively, but there have been good secondary contributions from players like Ryan Kesler, Alex Burrows and speedster Mason Raymond. And just as important so far for the Canucks has been the relative good health of its group along the blue line, which was decimated by injuries last season.
The assumption has always been that the Canucks will only go as far as Luongo takes them. That might still be true. But Vancouver is playing well and still has some big cap room to make major moves. And to keep surprising people.
