C. Ward to be shut down?: Sportsnet.ca's Nick Kypreos tweeted that Hurricanes G Cam Ward (back), who was scheduled to see a back specialist on Monday, could be shut down for the season. The Raleigh News & Observer also reports that Ward will be observed by doctors for the next couple of weeks.

Fantasy Analysis

We've already had one goalie -- Nikolai Khabibulin -- shut down with a back issue this season, so the former enforcer Kypreos might not be too crazy with this prediction. Then again, he did take a few shots to the head during his career, so don't go and drop Ward just yet in any format. While Ward and the Canes were really struggling earlier this season, both had seen a resurgence before this injury popped up. Ward is a No. 2 Fantasy goalie when healthy, but you might want to start making plans just in case he is done for the year. Manny Legace and Justin Peters would be the goalies remaining if Ward ends up being shelved.

G Cam Ward (back) hasn't played since Feb. 3 at Calgary because of a lower back problem that seemed to become progressively worse during the first couple of days. He'll be re-evaluated during the Olympic break, meaning he'll miss a total of five games leading to the layoff. 29//2010

Ward missed the Hurricanes' game Friday night against Buffalo after being sent home for treatment on an upper-body injury.

Carolina coach Paul Maurice said Ward, who has played in 26 of the past 27 games after returning from a leg laceration, stiffened up on the team's flight from Calgary to Buffalo following a loss to the Flames on Wednesday night. Manny Legace started in place of Ward, but not before experiencing a scare in the pregame warmups. Justin Powers was recalled from Albany of the AHL to replace Ward.
