Kovalchuk contributes in NJ debut: Jay Pandolfo capped a three-goal outburst in the final 3:04 and the New Jersey Devils welcomed Ilya Kovalcuk by rallying for a 4-3 victory over the stunned Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday. Dean McAmmond, Travis Zajac and Pandolfo scored in the wild finish to turn a disappointing debut for Kovalchuk into a wild celebration. The explosive Kovalchuk, acquired from Atlanta on Thursday in a blockbuster five-player deal, finished with two assists. Kovalchuk set up the Devils' first goal by Dainius Zubrus in the first period. Kovalchuk also assisted on Travis Zajac's power-play tally.

Fantasy Analysis

Kovalchuk had just one goal and one assist in his final six games with Atlanta. It seemed as though all the trade rumors really distracted him. Now that he has a new home, Kovalchuk can finally get back to work. New Jersey isn't known as an offensive team under Jacques Lemaire, but Kovalchuk is one of the best players in the world and should be just fine. Marian Gaborik was a big-time threat for years under Lemaire in Minnesota, so it is possible for Kovalchuk to keep pace.

LW Ilya Kovalchuk, who had eight shots without a goal against the Rangers on Saturday, fired nine more with no success in Monday night's 3-2 loss in Philadelphia. Odd that D Anssi Salmela, the other guy picked up from Atlanta last week, would score for the Devils before Kovalchuk. 28//2010
