When Bill Sheridan was promoted from Giants' linebackers coach to become the team's defensive coordinator, he knew he was getting All-Pro defensive end Osi Umenyiora back from a season spent rehabilitating his injured knee.

What Sheridan couldn't have known was that the Giants intended to buy him a couple of other welcoming gifts, namely tackles Chris Canty (6-7, 295), who played both end and tackle in the 3-4 Dallas scheme, and Rocky Bernard, who is solely a tackle.

It wouldn't have been enough to keep Steve Spagnuolo from accepting the head coaching job in St. Louis, but it does set up a defense that could very well do for Sheridan what the Giants' unit did for Spagnuolo -- make him a winner in his first season as coordinator.

"I have to feel we have a very sound defense, maybe one of the best in the league," Sheridan said the other day. "Getting Osi back was a great thing, and signing the guys we signed during the UFA period was more than I could have hoped for."

What Sheridan plans to do is still a privileged secret, but knowing that he worked closely under Spagnuolo and shared the same helter-skelter style of intimidating pass rush, it is probably no secret that he will, in the words of his predecessor, "put the best 11 guys on the field," which in turn translates into putting the best seven front line and linebacker people on the field, too.

"We are a press defense," he said, "so when it's clearly pass rush time, they (the offense) will have to figure out who's coming, who's faking and who's staying back. It's a challenge for any offense, and even for the best of them it forces adjustments."

The quick release is one mode of compensation. The short drop that usually accompanies it is another. Sometimes a pump fake will result in handing the ball to a power back going up the middle. But whatever the case, the Giants will have a crew of outstanding players on the field.

It might involve Canty at end or Justin Tuck moving from end to tackle, or tackle Jay Alford going to outside to end. Or there may be other combinations in Sheridan's bag of tricks. Suffice to say that end Mathis Kiwanuka will spend some time at strong-side linebacker, too, or might just help to form a front four (or five) of quick, strong pass rushers.

In the end, it would be wrong to assume the offenses that come up against will this Giants' defensive unit will enjoy the experience even a little bit.

Jeremy Shockey 2 super bowl rings : Osi, Jacobs, Eli, Tuck, and anyone else on our team, 1 ring. The Giants sure did fix ole big mouth, disobedient Shockey, sending him away to play with a better QB, better head coach and better offensive coordinator while c ...(more)

I think that it's for the Giants to decide what they're going to do with kiwanuka. If he's not an linebacker then either put him on the D-line at end or trade him for a linebacker or a run stopping DT. our defense against the run was almost as bad as our pass defense and that was pretty bad. Or we put him at end and get rid of Osi (which i ...(more)

Hey Giants fans I don't Know if he is a free agent or not, but since he is not really close with Rex Ryan but do you see the Giants (if he isn't a  free agent) getting Rhodes for maybe a 3rd round draft pick he isnt that bad, He and Phillips can really help build a stong secondary tell me what you think.

With the CBA problems, there are going to be very few good free agents out there.  Dansby is going to be a free agent no matter what.  ESPN "rumors" has the Giants interested.  I think it would be a good signing, then the Giants could focus on other needs in the draft like taking Earl Thomas in the first  round.  Th ...(more)

I say we package osi and our 1st rounder to the Rams for The #1 pick and with all probability Suh. That in theory sounds good but what does everyone think about the chances of it happening? Spags knows osi and can probably get the most out of him plus the Rams have been rumored to want to trade down and take a qb.

So, your boy Shockey is in the Superbowl. Who's rooting for him and the Saints, who's rooting against? Does anyone care? Does him being on the Saints steer you in either direction? (rooting for or against them just b/c he's on the team)

(Remember when he ws supposed to be the 2nd coming of Mark Bavaro? Funny stuff right

With Peppers looking to be a free agent, do we spend the money to grab this guy.  I know we have a stock of D-Linemen right now, but with Cofield, Robbins, and Bernard not likely to be resigned how good would a Osi, Peppers, Tuck, Kiwinuaka lineup look.  I know he has a high price tag but the number of sacks that lineup would generate would be unbelievable.  I know that I also ...(more)

Ok, it pains me to say this because I have had alot of love for this guy from day one when he put on Blue, but he has to go.  How can you as a player say that you will retire if you are not a starter, because of your own poor play.  It's obvious that he had not fully recovery from his sugery in 2008.  He didn't have the same speed last year, he didn't have the same fire in his belly ...(more)

(POLL) There seems to be a lot of differing opinions on which direction the Giants should go in on draft day,  so I created this poll.
Which position should be top priority  in the 1st round at #15?

Yup....That's where the Giants horrid gray game pants belong! Donate them to the UFL NY Sentinels.  Did you see how mean and nasty Diehl, Snee, O'Hara and Smitty looked in those dark blue Pro Bowl game pants? Personally, I thought those NFC uniforms looked absolutely fantastic set off against the dynamite Giants Blue + Red Helmets ...(more)
