Titans: Five things to know

Titans: Camp report | RapidReports | Camp tour | Questions

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Observations from Tennessee Titans camp:

1. The Titans have one of the deepest rosters in the league. Usually when you go to a camp you pick out five or six spots on the starting 22 that have issues. With the Titans there might be two or three spots that are a little bit of a concern. They are middle linebacker (although the team likes Stephen Tulloch), left corner with veteran Nick Harper, and the replacement group that takes over for Albert Haynesworth. That's it. And that's nitpicking. "This is the best team we've had since I've been here," Titans coach Jeff Fisher said. That's high praise, considering his 1999 team went to the Super Bowl and last season's team was 13-3.

Out of Nowhere Man
Pete Prisco selects Javon Ringer for the Titans' Out of Nowhere Man Even though they had a deep backfield already, the Titans drafted running back Javon Ringer in the fifth round of April's draft. So far, he has impressed. He is tougher than his 5-9 size might indicate. The talk in Nashville is he could push 2007 second-round pick Chris Henry off the roster.

He did okay last year considering the amount of time he got.

2. When the Titans signed Nate Washington as an unrestricted free agent from the Steelers, some thought he was simply a speed guy who could run 9-routes all day long. But he has been much more than that. The Titans were surprised at how complete a receiver he has become. He does a great job of running all the routes. Some Titans players told me he's much more than expected. With rookie first-round pick Kenny Britt also in the mix to join Justin Gage, the Titans should have plenty of weapons for Kerry Collins. Does that mean they throw more? Probably a little, but don't expect huge changes under Fisher.

3. LenDale White has slimmed down in a big way and looks quicker. White was the team's goal-line runner last year, but he wants to be more. So he lost 30 pounds. He has always had good feet for a big man, so the loss of the weight will help. He will back up Chris Johnson again to form a nice 1-2 combo. Johnson is the speed guy, while White is the power player. White said he dropped the weight by giving up tequila; he must have slurped it by the gallon. Johnson, by the way, said he is much more comfortable with the offense this year. "I won't have to think as much," he said. That's scary stuff for defenses.

4. The biggest key for the Titans is Collins. Was last season an aberration at his age or something that will continue? Judging by the way he threw it the day I watched, it's the latter. Collins, 36, looked sharp and with the new weapons he should be even better. The Titans are a run-first team, but they might give more to Collins to do this season. Vince Young remains the backup and he doesn't seem to be progressing. He just doesn't pass it that well.

5. If you're looking for a fantasy pick, take a hard look at rookie tight end Jared Cook. He has been impressive. At South Carolina, he was handcuffed by playing with bad quarterbacks, but he has excelled on the practice field. He is a long, rangy player who can run. The Titans have Alge Crumpler and Bo Scaife at tight end, but Cook has the look of a special player.
