Move to Patriots may be Taylor's path to Hall

The rest of the NFL is going to find out in 2009 what I've been preaching for years and what opposing players have been saying about running back Fred Taylor for a long time.

He is special.

By signing a two-year deal with the New England Patriots, Taylor now gets a chance to finally get his due. Not from players -- they've always respected him -- but from the media and the nation's fans that have never come to understand just how good a runner he has been in his 11-year career.

Taylor and the Patriots are a perfect fit.

Maybe a Hall of Fame fit.

Playing for the Jacksonville Jaguars for 11 seasons, Taylor was tucked away from the media spotlight, rarely getting the attention he deserved.

I can count many a conversation with Taylor discussing how playing in Jacksonville limits the exposure a star player can get. He never openly complained, but he did understand the way of the NFL.

Big-market teams steal the spotlight. They get the hits on the 24-hour sports cycle.

Even when the Jaguars played in two AFC Championship Games -- Taylor played in the 1999 game -- it's a team that doesn't warrant much media attention.

I know. I live there.

That now changes for Taylor. The Patriots are a glamour team with a glamour-boy quarterback and arguably the best coach of all time.

"I'm just going to go up there and try and fit in," Taylor said.

Adding Taylor is another brilliant move by the Patriots' brass, which is really coach Bill Belichick.
