TIME: 01:00 P.M. EST VENUE: Ralph Wilson Stadium Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers came into the season with low expectations. Although those seemed well-founded in the first five weeks, Favre has a chance to guide his team back to .500 when the Packers try for their third straight win in a road matchup with the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. Even with Favre returning for his 16th season, few observers gave Green Bay (3-4) much of a chance to make a run at the playoffs, and the Packers lost four of their first five games. Green Bay, though has taken advantage of a soft stretch of schedule the past two weeks, defeating Miami and Arizona, and hopes to keep rolling this week at Buffalo (2-5). "A win is a win," Packers cornerback Charles Woodson said after last week's 31-14 victory over the Cardinals. "I don't care if we win against Green Bay High." The Packers played perhaps their most complete game of the season against Arizona, as Ahman Green and Vernand Morency each topped 100 yards rushing, and Favre threw for a touchdown and ran for another. After being intercepted five times in his first four games, Favre has thrown for 606 yards and four touchdowns in his last three games while compiling a passer rating of 89.9. Green Bay has scored 85 points in the last three contests after being held to 67 in the first four. "It's not over," said wide receiver Donald Driver, who had five catches for 48 yards against Arizona. "We're still in the hunt. I think a lot of people kind of ruled us out. But the Pack is back." Green, though, will have to shoulder a bigger load in the running game Sunday after Morency was ruled out for at least the next two games due to a lower back injury suffered in the fourth quarter. Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Noah Herron, who rushed for 106 yards in a loss to St. Louis on Oct. 8, is likely to see more action. "We tend to forget, Noah Herron just had a very nice game a couple weeks ago, too," McCarthy said. "So we'll continue to forge on, and Noah will pick up the attempts that Vernand has left behind." Starting fullback Brandon Miree may also sit out Sunday due to a hyperextended elbow, which would hinder Green Bay's blocking for Green and Herron. "He was a big part of the success in our run scheme," McCarthy said of the rookie. "I thought his decisions were very good, played with good pad level, good finish." Green Bay has not won three in a row since a six-game run in 2004. The Packers will be facing a Bills team that staggered into its bye week with three straight losses. Buffalo was held to 255 total yards in a 28-6 home loss to New England on Oct. 22. The Bills are trying to stay positive despite posting the third-lowest point total in the NFL (100). "We're capable of going on a run," rookie safety Donte Whitner said. "There are teams that are hot right now that are going to cool off, and teams that are not hot right now that are going to catch fire. We want to be one of those football teams that catch fire and hopefully make it to the playoffs." The Bills have averaged 214.0 yards while being outscored 88-30 during the losing streak. Quarterback J.P. Losman has been sacked 10 times, intercepted five times and lost two fumbles in that span, prompting Bills coach Dick Jauron to retool the offensive line heading into Sunday's game. The biggest switch has Jason Peters switching from right tackle to left tackle, with rookie Terrance Pennington taking over on the right side. Jauron - the Packers' defensive backs coach from 1986-94 - used the bye week to implement the moves in practice, ones that he hopes will spark the offense. "You don't want to watch your team struggle the way we've been struggling," Jauron told buffalobills.com. "We believe (the changes are) in the best interest of everybody and our football team. So we're going forward with it and see where it goes. We know there are better things in front of us." Bills running back Willis McGahee is 61 rushing yards shy of becoming the seventh player in team history to reach 3,000. McGahee, though, has run for just 253 yards in the last four games after a 150-yard effort in a 28-20 loss to the New York Jets on Sept. 24. Favre is 2-2 against the Bills, and the Packers posted a 10-0 win in the last meeting between the teams Dec. 22, 2002, at Lambeau Field. Favre, though, is 0-2 at Ralph Wilson Stadium despite throwing for 480 yards and five touchdowns in the two games. |
