GENERAL REPORT: GRADE: 6.2
Body Structure: Magee has adequate bulk, but displays very good quickness and solid strength for the three-technique position. He has good chest and arm muscles and thick quadriceps and calves to anchor securely. He has room to add more bulk, if he is to remain at tackle, but if he is to remain at defensive end, he is better served maintaining his weight to insure that he will continue to perform with the foot speed he displays.
Athletic Ability: Magee lacks the ideal frame you look for in a physically imposing defensive tackle, but has impressive strength for a player his size. He lacks suddenness of the snap when he gets too high in his stance, but when he sinks his pads, he causes problems for bigger blockers, as he can burst off the snap and get under his man's jersey to jerk and control. He demonstrates natural feet and good body control working down the line. He has adequate change of direction agility, but shows inconsistency accelerating to the ball when having to chase down along the corners. He flashes the ability to stack and control at the point of attack, and has the balance needed to stay on his feet working through trash. GRADE: 6.4
Football Sense: Magee does well with normal reps to retain plays and shows good field vision, but is a bit hesitant at times when needed to redirect and while he has decent hip snap, he takes false steps when changing direction. He bounced back and forth between left defensive end and right tackle, but is more comfortable making reads from the inside gaps than when aligned over the outside shoulder of an offensive tackle. GRADE: 5.7
Character: Magee is a quiet sort who shows good maturity. The coaches say he is pleasant, respectful and a good mentor for the team's younger players. He made a personal sacrifice moving to defensive end as a senior, especially since it did not help him fine tune some of the technique work he needed to work on against double teams as a defensive tackle. GRADE: 6.1
Competitiveness: Magee plays with a steady motor. He is aggressive pushing the pocket and made steady improvement with his upper body strength as a senior. He gives total effort on the field and while his production was down as an end in 2008, he looked forward to the opportunity and challenge of playing there. He is a fine player who shows toughness and aggression on the field. GRADE: 6.4
Work Habits: Magee is an avid worker in the weight room, evident by his impressive bench press showing at the NFL Combine. He plays with good desire and effort, taking that work ethic into practices and by spending extra hours in the film room. He has a lot of Kelly Gregg (Baltimore Ravens) in him - tough, intense and refuses to give an inch to any offensive lineman. He is a solid worker and a self-motivator who does not need to be told the same thing twice. GRADE: 6.6
ATHLETIC REPORT: GRADE: 6.23
Explosion/Pursuit: Magee shows good initial quickness coming off the snap, but you would not call it sudden. He is more than just a two-gap defender, as he can slip through the gap and displays the playing speed to chase down ball carriers near the sidelines. He has the quick feet, agility and balance to make plays in space and has the strength to jolt offensive guards with his quick hand action and punch. GRADE: 6.9
Strength at Point: Magee worked hard to improve his upper body strength since the end of the 2007 season, increasing his bench press by close to 30 pounds. He is capable of playing with good leverage and is making progress showing consistency when needed to stack vs. double teams. When he stays low in his pads, he plays with leverage and does a good job with his hands to split double teams to make plays on the move. He shows good knee bend and a solid anchor to hold ground at the point of attack. When he gets placement on a blocker, he can generate enough power behind his punch to jolt. He also can create enough surge off the ball to rock the guards backwards when trying to penetrate and close the pocket. GRADE: 6.4
Use of Hands: Before 2007, Magee did not show much gap-shooting ability. As he became more comfortable playing in the two-gap, he began to use his hands more consistently and his extension prevented the offensive linemen from locking on to him. He will keep his hands active, showing a good punch and explosion to control. He has developed into an effective pocket pusher, but still needs to do a better job with his hands in protecting his feet from low blocks. If he gets under a blocker's pads, he has the ability to stand his opponent up. He has also shown good timing to get his hands up as a kick blocker and to deflect passes at the line of scrimmage. GRADE: 6.0
Lateral Pursuit/Effort: Magee shows good lateral pursuit effort and desire. He shows good urgency running to the ball. He has the foot quickness and enough playing speed to read and react quickly on screen passes. When he moves out to the flat, he shows the ability to take angles and make tackles behind the line of scrimmage. GRADE: 6.7
Tackling Ability: Magee might not pile up great statistics, but he is an efficient tackler who can stop ball carriers at the line of scrimmage once he wraps and secures. He is better taking on lead blockers and clogging the rush lanes than making hits in the open field, but he does play with good angle concept and will not hesitate to face up. He is quick to get into position, lower his pads, extend his arms, wrap and secure the ball carrier. He shows a good flow to the ball inside the box and good collision on contact. He is just not especially effective hunting down scrambling quarterbacks once he comes in from the backside. GRADE: 6.0
Run Defense: Despite giving up some pounds to the bigger offensive linemen, Magee has the ability to hold and stack when he stays low in his pads and plays with leverage. He has good, functional strength, but must not get too high in his stance (when he does, he lacks consistent explosion). He can split tackles and shows strength taking on blocks, but he lacks the leg drive to get a consistent anchor vs. double teams when he stands up in his attack (much better when he sinks his weight). He makes plays staying flat and square down the line of scrimmage and shows good upper body strength at the point of attack. GRADE: 6.5
Pass Rush: The experience on the edge in 2008 can only help improve his pass rush technique. He is more of a bull rusher than one coming off the edge, as there is really not much technique he shows in this area. He plays with good effort and desire rushing the passer, but has only limited moves. He needs to improve his hand usage playing off low blocks on the move. When he's attacked low, he does not show the knee lift to avoid those blocks. For a player of his size, you would expect him to bull rush more. GRADE: 5.6
Closing on the QB: Magee shows good desire and can get into the backfield adequately once he gains separation, but pressuring the pocket is not really his forte. He has that extra surge to shoot the gaps, but mostly just in the five-yard range. You would like to see him use more power than quickness in attempts to penetrate (when he tries to finesse, he struggles to shed, as he leaves his chest exposed for the blocker to lock on). GRADE: 5.7
Instincts/Recognition: Magee plays with good instincts and recognition skills. He can feel, read and react to pocket movement and shows good alertness sifting through trash for the ball. He can get fooled some on play-action and fakes, but is good at spotting blocking schemes. He also shows good balance getting back into the action when he over-pursues. GRADE: 6.3
Compares To: CLIFTON RYAN, St. Louis -- Magee is a jack-of-all-trades who can play tackle or end. He shows nimble feet and good pursuit quickness to make plays along the line or when shooting the gaps. He lacks great bulk, but compensates with his strength to stack and control. He plays with good effort and desire moving laterally and while he won't ever be a quality pass rusher, the experience at defensive end can only help when he returns to his more natural position inside at the next level. A team looking for a quick under tackle like Ryan or Arizona's Darnell Dockett could find a similar player in Magee.
