02/02/2009 - The mother of former Ohio State left tackle Alex Boone said tonight that her son has been released from police custody in the Los Angeles area after his arrest late Sunday night. Amy Boone said her son, a former St. Ed star and an All-Big Ten selection during his senior season with the Buckeyes, was charged with public intoxication, while a police spokesperson said it was possible that other charges could be filed. Previously, Alex Boone was convicted of drunken driving after his arrest in April of 2006, a time when he vowed to put his issues with drinking, which he said started in eighth grade, behind him. "We love and support him. He is our heart and soul, and our plan is to help him with this problem," Amy Boone said tonight from her home in Lakewood. "This is obviously a problem. He had it in the past and it has reared its ugly head again." Boone was living in the Los Angeles area while working out a facility that trains players for the NFL Draft. He had been invited to attend the NFL Combine in the middle of February. Amy Boone said her son had been worried about his falling draft stock, and this arrest will only hurt his prospects in the eyes of NFL teams. Amy Boone said the plan is still for Alex to continue working out in Los Angeles and attend the combine. "He is under a tremendous amount of stress, which most people will never know," Amy Boone said. "He is devastated and so sorry that this happened." Boone was arrested just before midnight on Sunday, allegedly with a blood alcohol level three times the legal limit of .08 in California. Boone was not driving, however, but was, according to a police spokesman, jumping on cars in the parking lot of his apartment complex and on the back of a tow truck. - Doug Lesmerises, The Cleveland Plain Dealer

02/02/2009 - Ohio State offensive lineman Alex Boone has been arrested after being subdued with a Taser during an alleged drunken tirade. Orange County sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino says the 6-foot-8, 312-pound tackle was jumping on car hoods, yanking on a tow truck cable and trying to break a window when he was arrested late Sunday. Amormino says the 21-year-old, who appeared intoxicated, was combative and uncooperative with sheriff's deputies and had to be taken down with a Taser. He was taken to a hospital and then to a jail medical ward, where he remains. Boone, who was selected All-Big Ten this year, could be selected in the NFL draft in April. - AP Sports

    Overview

By no means is Boone perfect -- see game tape against speedy Florida and LSU past BCS games, or his arrest for driving under the influence in April 2006 -- but NFL teams will take into account his steady play, durability and willingness to work. He's a four-year starter who was named All-Big Ten the past two seasons. Boone may lack the athleticism to handle left tackle in the NFL, but he could enjoy a lengthy career on the right side.

    Analysis

Positives: Tall tackle prospect with good functional strength and long arms. … His size and strength makes it tough to bull rush him. … Has lined up at left and right tackle. … Agile enough to combo down and then move straight ahead to the middle linebacker. … Can lock onto defensive ends and keep them out of the play. … Recognizes blitzes and twists.

Negatives: May need to play right tackle in the pros, as he is more of a mauler than an athlete. … Lumbers in space, and does not play through the whistle. … Needs more consistency using his punch to keep pass rushers off balance. … Does not move his feet or hands quickly enough to handle explosive speed on the edge. … Also loses his balance when sustaining because he leans too far forward and his hands are not inside the body. … Plays too upright in pass protection. … Lacks great flexibility to adjust to oncoming blitzers.
