Capps will be the Nationals closer: Reliever Matt Capps and the Nationals finalized their $3.5 million, one-year contract Wednesday. Capps' agent, Paul Kinzer, said more than a dozen teams contacted him about making an offer -- including three proposals for two years and more money than Washington gave Capps. But other clubs wanted to make Capps a setup man. The Nationals told him he would close games for them. General manager Mike Rizzo even had tried to deal for the right-hander before July's trading deadline. "Matt was on our map for a long time," Rizzo said. "He encompasses everything we're trying to do here: young, character, hard-nosed, guts on the mound, not afraid, a winning attitude on and off the field. He's a guy we identified, and we went after him.

Fantasy Analysis

Until last season, it was believed Capps was a standout reliever on a bad team. While he did set a career high with 27 saves in 2009, he became a suspect closer on a bad team -- a doubly bad combination for Fantasy owners. It led to him being non-tendered in the winter. Even though he already has the closer role, he is going to have to prove more healthy and consistent to be useful in mixed Fantasy leagues again. Consider him more of an NL-only closer option, especially since the rebuilding Nationals don't figure to provide him with a consistent number of save opportunities.
