Lowrie a backup if still in Boston: With the team's signing of SS Marco Scutaro on Friday, Red Sox SS Jed Lowrie will have to prove he is healthy and productive enough to serve as a backup or force his way into a trade. He was unable to do that last year, when he injured his wrist and went on the disabled list after just five games.

Lowrie has more upside than Scutaro, but the Red Sox can't afford to wait for it with their win-now mentality. Lowrie will probably go undrafted in mixed leagues since injuries have kept him from meeting his potential and rendered him a reserve, but don't forget about him if the Red Sox trade him to a team that can start him.
