The Red Sox decided not to pick up Alex Gonzalez's 6 million dollar team option which was a little pricey for gonzo.  But where are were gonna find anything better out there?  Marco Scutaro is 34 i believe and came off a carreer year and is poised for a letdown and is looking for probably more money.  Then theres of course Edgar Renteria who is a free agent and Orlando Cabrera haha.  But i think we should offer Alex Gonzalez a 2 year 10 million deal and maybe a team option or something.  Ive heard rumors of someone in the farm being a good shorstop prostpect and this gives us time to develop him.  And that gives us the option with Jed Lowrie.  We could use him as part of a  package trade or if he does finally show up and win the starting position i dont think we would have to much trouble trading away gonzo.  Last time we tried to find something better than Alex Gonzalez we ended up with Lugo and that turned out great.

I think All Star Miguel Tejada would be the best option. Don't you! He hit 0ver .310 last year and got over 85 RBI's! He is a carreer .290 hitter!

IMO Tejada is by far the best SS available this offseason, there is no question he has the best skill set as far as hitting and is pretty sure handed in the field,  the issue is the price tag that comes along with him.

Drew was Theo's pipedream and he's proven that liking a player doesn't neccessarily make him a good fit. Drew makes $14M a year.

Tejada wants a three year deal. He's not going to get that from any team with a half a brain. There are very few MLB players that maintain their health or performance after 35.

From what I've heard, Theo is working his butt off trying to get Hanley Ramirez back from the Marlins. The Marlins are saying publicly that they are going to trade him.  There are three problems here..(1) he makes $11.5M this year (2) he makes $13M next year (3) he make $14.5M in 2012.  The Marlins can't keep him and field a team. I expect it to cost the Red Sox Clay Bucholz and Bowden and probably Lars Anderson or Reddick. If they can't that done, they may hold their breath and hope that Jed Lowrie's wrist is healed properly and he can go back to SS. Don't discount this. He's a near .300 hitter, sprays a lot of doubles around and can run the bases. He's young and cheap.

Theo is also trying to get Jed Hoyer to make a deal that send Adrian Gonzalez to Boston. If he can get that done, resign Bay (5 years $75M) then having Lowrie at SS will be acceptable.

Here's a potential lineup:

Ellsbury CF
Pedroia 2B
Gonzalez 1B
Ortiz  DH
Martinez C
Bay LF
Youklis 3B
Drew RF
Lowrie SS

That doesn't look that bad.  Add Hermida to the bench to come in for 56 games that Drew can't play and it's a competitive team. Then one has to think about the starting pitching and the bull pen.

The BIG question is this:  Is this lineup enough to challenge the New York Yankees??

i feel all along that if your going to trade for elite bat and give up prospects go after Hanley Ramirez... if u can't get him i think cabrera in detroit is another option a great young hitter prob wouldnt cost as much as hanley or Adrian Gonzalez...if u cant get hanley go after tejada no more than 2 years or resign alex gonz...boston needs a big bat in the middle of the lineup also need to resign bay and add another good pitcher...lackey will only cost money not prospects...theo do what it takes to win next year..............

News is that Alex Gonzalez has signed with the Blue Jays. What does this mean for the Red Sox? Well Marco Scutaro has the Sox high on his list and the Sox are interested in him. I hope he does not sign with the Sox as I have issues with signing someone in their 30's coming off a career year.

Theo did state that he was going to get someone via either free agency or trade so that leaves a few options hopefully it is via trade as that means there is more chance of getting a young good hitting SS.

To the poster who said the Marlins are looking to trade Hanley:

You are completely false.
