I couldn't watch the game because my internet doesn't hook up with espn360 so I had to listen to the radio which goes in and out, so I also was updating CBS sport about every minute or two. But from what heard, Paul is a beast and will be starting over the sorry Legion by the time we play Clemson (Dec. 2) unless Legion gets his act together. I think he has just had too much pressure over his career here at Illinois. Bill Cole looks like he will see more playing time come his way this year. Hopefully Sermaru will get more minuets this year because I think he is a decent player. And I know that we were supposed to win this one easy, but I am really pumped for this years team. (and even more pumped for the next 5 seasons for sure!!) I see us actually being able to beating Michigan St. and Clemson this year!! What do you guys think??
GO ILLINI
P.S.  OKREE SUCKS

I think it's almost over.  All I know is Brandon Paul had 22 points in 18 minutes.

I cannot watch it, but it looks like the 2 freshman are getting most of the shots.

See, I told you guys, that 7 rebound performance last year wasn't a fluke. Give Semrau a chance and I think he'll be a good bench player and he can definitely hit the boards as we witnessed his hustle in 1 series where he got 2 rebs. and fought to get those rebs. on the same possession.

I have always wondered why he never got more time last year. Once Meyers Leonard comes next year, he'll probably never see the court but until then, give him the chance, he can surprise you.

This was a great game to get our freshman into games right away and start getting solid and productive minutes. It's the first time we started freshman in a long time and I too am very excited. Good performance by the whole team. I still don't know what is up with Alex Legion. He needs to learn this defense and start making shot along with that attitude. Good game.

P.S.  If we want to get a zone defense working, we'll need to get more practice on it. I noticed when we went to it in the second half we couldn't do anything. We're a much better man defense team

Like Meachem, Semrau was very up and down last year, and put up his best minutes against inferior competition.

If he can be consistent, great.  But Weber gave him every chance to contribute last year, and he effectively played his way out of the rotation once Big Ten season started.

Semrau has had a lot of adversity to deal with. I just read how his grandmother died and he put in a 6 pt. 6 rebound performance after his grandmother died, arguably his best game as a college athlete.

To me, that says a lot about the kid.

He never got a fair chance. That's bull and you know it. He had to deal with a chest contusion that sidelined his during his freshman year, then he had a knee injury the next year. Last year he got a chance early, has a 7 rebound game, and then you don't hear from him the rest of the season. It's just like with Bill Cole, where was he all of last year until the end of the season? He didn't get a fair chance until Chester got hurt. Then his grandmother dies this year.

He's had a lot to deal with a lot and effectively, those injuries took a lot out of him and it took him a long time to get back into basketball shape.

And what bad do you have to say about Meacham then? So you're tellin me I'm wrong to be down on Legion but you are being down on Meacham? Doesn't sound right to me.

it makes no difference what the reason is that may be causing a player to underperform.  If your not playing well, then your not in the lineup.  period.  Do you honestly think coach webber would keep a stud out of the lineup for an entire season when we had a chance to win the bigten?  if you do then your dilusional.

And what bad do you have to say about Meacham then? So you're tellin me I'm wrong to be down on Legion but you are being down on Meacham? Doesn't sound right to me.he didnt say anything bad about trent.  just laying down the facts.  quit trying to start fights over this whole Legion-Meachem-Semrau vendetta your on.  its starting to get annonying when we have to read it on every thread, its childish.

And what bad do you have to say about Meacham then? So you're tellin me I'm wrong to be down on Legion but you are being down on Meacham? Doesn't sound right to me.See my post on this topic on another thread.  I'm tired of repeating myself.  I was always a big fan of Meachem, but I also recognize his limitations.

As for Semrau, Cole, and everyone else who is struggling to balance basketball efforts with growing up in a tough world...  nothing is fair.  Never was.  If, as you say, Semrau never got back into playing shape, then that is on him.  The chest contusion was three years ago.  Missing the month of Feb two years ago with a knee injury didn't help either, but he had only played in 9 games on the season at the time.  It's not like the knee injury was a sudden and massive setback.  And it had nothing to do with last season.

He never got a fair chance. That's bull and you know it. Weber gave him consistent and decent minutes in the early going.  By Big Ten play, that had dropped to mopup duty.  How is that not getting a fair chance?  A coach's job is to put his players in positions to succeed, and to win games.  Is it possible - just possible - that Weber did his best to get Semrau into matchups where he thought he would succeed, and put other players in when he thought they would help more?  And that Semrau didn't show much after the Clemson game to merit more PT?

And, for your information, this is not remotely ragging on Semrau.  I like the kid, I hope he does well for many reasons.  For the team's sake, I would love to see him turn into another Jack Ingram-type bruiser who can also hoover in rebounds and punish opposing players.  For his own sake, I would love to see his efforts and perseverance rewarded.  But I'm under no illusions.  About any of these players.  They are all kids, and Bruce Weber does his best to help all of them to grow, both on the court and off.  They all have their issues, they are all trying to get better, and the team is trying to win.  Some will succeed more than others.  Such is life.

Semrau turned in a nice performance vs Clemson last year, but getting a lot of boards in one game says very little, as there is a huge amount of randomness in where the ball bounces.  If, for example, three or four balls went right to him, that could account for a lot.  In short, there is a large amount of randomness in any individual stat line in a single game, so only rebounds over time, or something like rebounds per minute, will be a good indicator.  He averaged roughly one rebound every six minutes on the floor (one per 5.94 minutes).  By way of comparison, Cole got one every 5.8 minutes, Keller every 5.4, Davis every 3.8, and only Tisdale of all big men averaged worse, with one every 6.2 minutes.  In short, for a guy whose physique suggests he should be a rebounding animal, he didn't get all that many.  He played 190 minutes last year, which is enough time to get a decent snapshot.  He had no injury issues last year.  And Weber didn't exactly have any rebounding machines besides Davis, so Semrau had plenty of opportunities to get in there, grab some boards, and grab minutes.

Continuing to reference one game in which he played well as an example of "potential" is quite misleading.  I could talk about Legion's performance at MSU as an indication of what he could do, but that wouldn't tell the entire story either.

Fact is, I try to be accurate in assessing all of these kids' strengths and weaknesses.  Legion has been a disappointment, and instead of ragging on him for it, I hope he pulls his game - and his life - together.  Semrau has shown flashes of being able to grab rebounds, and also big chunks of time where he disappears.  I hope he brings the fire and hustle to the court that he could, as it will take a lot of desire to grab a bunch of boards.  I have hopes for all of these kids.  And, while I will always try to be balanced in my views, and honest in all of my assessments of them, I will always root for all of them to do their best.
