Is Kyle Orton the future at QB for this franchise?  It just may be too early to tell but some concerns about his ability to play effectively against tough physical defenses are brought to light in the last 2 games Against the Ravens and Steelers.

Yes, Special teams played like crap against the Ravens and the O-line was terrible at pass protection and run blocking teh last 2 games, but the Steelrs game was too much for him to handle in my opinion. 

Everyone wants to make excuses fo rhim by stating that we played the 2 teams in teh AFC title game last year. 

Well isn't the goal to win a title game?  If we can't beat a team with a tough defense because our QB folds then we are just spinning our wheels.

I am not saying bench him, I have been a big supporter of Kyle all year, but the question is ripe for discussion.

Is Kyle Orton the future of this franchise and is he capable of winning the big game?

I have a feeling that McDaniels is grooming Tom Brandstater to be the future Qb of this team and Kyle Orton is just here until McDaniels thinks he's ready. But then again, McD has gotten rid of some of young players (Brett Kern, Jack Williams) for older ones (Mitch Berger, Ty Law) even though the younger guys were better for the team, as far as the future of the team is concerned, so who the heck knows?

It is way too early to tell, we have seen games where it looks like he could be the answer at QB and a game where he looked like the opposite.  We have to see how he plays throughout the year, how he progresses and how he is able to move the offense.  Remember he is only 8 games into a very complicated offense and based on that alone you would think he would only improve.

The same thing with Brandstater, we dont know what he has.  He was drafted because he has certaint tools and traits that McD likes for his system but we have no idea how he will progress.  There is a lot of football to be played and what we have leared so far is that McD seems to be quite a bit smarter about personell decisions then most of the bloggers, "experts" and sports writers... only time will tell.

I've been avoiding the boards because I knew people would be overreacting to the 2 losses.

1. We lost to a Ravens team that went to the AFC championship game last season.
2. We lost to the SB champion Stealers.

Let's not act like this is the end of the world.

3. We are still 6-2 with the Redskins up next. Most people/fans/experts thought we'd be lucky to be 2-6 at this point.

If we lose to the Skins we are 6-3, still not bad. Sure losing to the Skins would be cause for alarm but we'd still be 3 games above 500. In all likelyhood we win and are 7-3 which means people that put money on the OVER for win/loss against Vegas have already won that bet since most sportsbooks had 6.5 wins.

So for the overall team we are still completely exceeding expectaions...even if we lose to the Skins. The problem is people who constantly readjust their scales of what's a good season. "We suck, we won't win 4 games. We suck we didn't win 7 games. We suck we didn't win 10 games".....and so on.

Basically the same goes for Orton. He was 6-0 and it was all good. The team loses 2 games to the SB champions and the team they beat in the AFC championship game, now Orton sucks. It's all Orton's fault????

Our great O-line has been blocking like crap. Our great RBs have been running like crap. Our great coach has been calling plays a Pop Warner coach could call. Heck, even I could call another bubble screen on 3rd and 15. Our great receivers are not getting open. Our D-line is not getting pressure. Our great defense is letting teams march down the field at will.

We'll be lucky to win another game this ENTIRE SEASON!!!! WE STINK!!!! FIRE JOSH!!! KILL BOWLEN!!! NOLAN SUCKS!!!!

But if we beat the Foreskins by 20, I take it all back and we are the greatest team ever.....until we lose again...then we suck!!!


One last point. Am I the only person in America that saw the ref was the cause of the pick-6??? The popular refrain is, "SEEEEEE, I told you weak arm!!!". IMO the ball was right where the receiver would have been if not for the ref getting in the way.

I voted for Orton as the QB of the future, but second guessing I'm not sure... He's still young enough to where he can learn from McDaniels (he's only 26, same age as Cutler) and just look how far he's come in just the past few months..  I believe our recent trouble begin with the offensive line... Either guys aren't getting it, or they are just too small for the new PBS.  One thing I can say is Hamilton has looked downright bad.  Aren't we glad to have Hochstein now, pretty much got him for free to..

After thinking about it, I believe that Orton won't be the QB of the future.. We'll let him go and get a pick, and let Simms continue on where Orton left off.  This will leave us with Brandstater competing for the starting spot with a year on his back and probably waiting another (2) year to soak in McDaniels.

Good call Crispy....I was screaming at my TV 15 seconds after the play because I saw that. The ref was late in recognizing that he was going to be in the way and when Knowshon made his cut the ref caught him off guard and he couldn't get to his spot.....PICK SIX......

Glad to know I wasn't the only one yelling at the TV about that!!! My fiance told me I was full of crud....then they showed the replay and I got to have an "I told you so moment"....pretty special to get one of those!!! haha

No. Not yet. I do like Orton and am willing to give him more time but you have to get some big plays from your offense. Is he capable? He has not shown it; at least not yet.

People forget the calls for a new QB when 16 was here. The offense was like watching paint dry sometimes. The game they played against Baltimore with 16 at QB looked identical to this year. The common thread? They can't use the whole field in the passing game.

We will see, only time will tell.

Jay Cutler threw 5 interceptions including one at end zone in final 8 seconds against 49ers.  Geez, got me wondering if Broncos were glad to get ride of him? 

As for Kyle Orton...it depends on how good supporting cast around him.  I might not be surprised if Broncos get to draft a quarterback in the early rounds.

Orton isn't a good enough athlete. He'd make a super back-up.. but he's not what I'd call a starter you want for the future.

I voted only time will tell because I want to see if he will get better, because right now, he is not a QB who can consistently compete at a high level.

I am willing to give him a chance, just like I am willing to give McDaniels a chance but I will still call 'em as I see 'em.

On a side note, they are ripping Cutler a new one on NFL Network right now.

I really hate my cable provider for not offering NFL Network.

Stink was just on ESPN news blaming all of Jonas Cutler's problems on the lack of a supporting cast.

The defense was the driving force behind the 6-0 start. Orton played well when he had to, but he hasn't been dominating in any form this year. Not taking risks doesn't necessarily make you good, just as making poor decisions doesn't necessarily make you bad.

Orton can't throw the deep ball well. That shouldn't be news to anyone. I like what I see out of McDaniels' offense but there are simply going to be times when a team has to throw it deep---or at least have the threat of being able to do so. Moreno is going to be a good back and the line is very solid, but it seems to me that defenses have adjusted to McDaniels' short game and aren't respecting the deep pass, which is frustrating with a huge target like Marshall and a burner like Royal on either side.

I'm not saying I don't like what I'm seeing from McDaniels. I do. But the offense would seem to work better with a guy who can throw with accuracy further than twenty yards down the field.

I don't see a 2009-like collapse. I think this squad gets in at least as a Wildcard. I wouldn't make a change with Orton this year. I think he'll continue to manage the game well. But he is not the QB who will lead Denver to another Super Bowl. I can understand fans thinking he could be, but unless Denver's aging defense can turn into the '76 Steelers, '85 Bears or '00 Ravens, I think a more talented QB for the future is needed.

Kyle Orton isn't in my long term plans as a Broncos STARTING QB. the reason why i underlined starting is because i think we will resign him and continue to try to develop him but it seems as if he is limited in some things. Matt Cassel appeared the same way until later in the season last year when he began executing the playbook better but it seems as if orton simply can't stretch the field and has issues when protection breaks down. i think he leads well and is well liked by the team but he has some issues and it seems teams will try to expose those unless our run game can do well. Like someone else brought up, he is kind of like Plummer in that he needs the team to perform at a certain level to win games. Plummer needed the run game to setup the boots and orton needs the run game to keep the defenses from blitzing and overpursuing. Im not sure if TB will be our future either though but i know McD will evaluate at the end of the season, i just don't see him changing to simms or TB.

Same thing happened to me Cali and Crispy.  My wife told me that the refs couldn't hear me, and that my yelling was scaring the dogs.  I'm gonna have to show her this thread, so I won't feel so alone.

As far as Orton is concerned, I don't think that he's the QB of the future for the Broncos, but I also don't feel like we have to be in huge hurry to get rid of him either.  He's a better-than-average quarterback, and with all the young talent on the team, he doesn't really have to carry the team.  If the running game gets out of neutral, and the defense continues to play like they've been playing, the Broncos don't have to be in a position where they'll only go as far as Orton can carry them.  I also don't believe that we can't win the big one with Orton under center.  As I said, this team has enough talent that they don't need Orton to carry them, and I think that Kyle will do until someone better comes along, or until Brandstater is ready.  The Broncos just need everybody to pull their own weight, and not put all of it on Orton.  Besides, I can remember at least two Super Bowl champions that had very average QB's lead them -  the 2000-2001 Baltimore Ravens with Trent Dilfer, and the 2002-2003 Tampa Bay Buccaneers with Brad Johnson.  Now, before somebody comes back and says "Orton is no Trent Dilfer", or "Orton is no Brad Johnson", I didn't say that he was.  All I'm saying is that it isn't necessary to have a Hall-of-Fame quarterback leading you, to have a successful season, or even to win the Super Bowl.  They just need to pull together as a team, cut down on mistakes, and continue to improve.  If they do that, good things are going to happen.

what a differance a week makes.  a very similar poll started by me a week ago brought a ton of critisizm.  The same points were brought up and the same questions asked.  here we are again looking at the same question in much the same way.  i pointed out i didn't think that changeing  the quarterback now was the answer but that i questioned how far we could go with orton as the quarterback.  i really wonder why this thread doesn't get the same response.  my point then and now are the same though.  for what ever reason, the offense is very conservative.  I have to wonder if those down the field passes would be more effective if royal, marshall, sheffler and stokley/gaffney were set loose on the same play ... more than once in a game ... after we have had the success with the short passing game we had against the Steelers.  look at the plays.  we sent one player deep and he was double and tripple covered.  that begs the question is this all on orton?

No, he is not our future.

If I remember right he is only on a one year deal. After this year I see him leaving town and us picking up some draft picks. With Denver's supporting cast it is really hard to not look really good. We do not lack talent at any recieving position. This week when we play Washington we will probably see some shots down field, us fans are not the only people who see we have a problem. I'm willing to give Orton benifit of the doubt and wait till after this game to say wether or not he can throw deep at all.

Would you be willing to sacrifice a few picks in order to get 30 or 40 yards down the field? I know I would. We know Orton can throw for 6-10 yards and not get picked at all (unlike Cutler, sorry had to say it), so lets give up 2 or 3 INT's this season to get 10-12 big plays.

I know the old football adage goes defense wins championships but it really should be a franchise QB's win championships. The last 15 SB winning QB's have been; Young, Aikman, Favre, Elway, Elway, Warner, Dilfer, Brady, Johnson, Brady, Brady, Roethlisberger, P.Manning, E.Manning, Roethlisberger. Other then Dilfer and Johnson all of them are at least very good QB's but most are true franchise QB's. The exception with those two QB's is that they had unbelievably great defenses. If you look even further back and it becomes even more clear you need that QB. 

I was so angry after the "trade" because I feel strongly that you win championships with a great QB. Cutler has turned into anything but and I am glad he is the Bears problem.   

Can you win with Orton and if so can you win Super Bowls with him? So the only question should be do you like the chances of the Broncos winning championships with someone like Orton?

NO THANKS! Been there....done that. Where exactly did that get us? 7-9, 8-8........again....NO THANKS!

Not to mention the fact that Jay Cutler could make a big play every other play and that would not make up for the fact that the guy is a terrible leader, and awful teammate and looks like a baby on the sideline. Good riddance.........

Until this idiot realizes that nobody cares if his arm is stronger than Jim McMahaon's he is going to be nothing more than his generations Jeff George, only with a worse haircut and personality, if that is even possible.
