Georgetown's schedule has been out for a little while now, but with the release of the Preseason Top 25 (the Hoyas come in at #21), we can now get a gauge of how difficult the opponents are looking. Here are some key matchups:
Nov 17 - Temple -- A name-brand basketball school that probably won't be as strong as in years past, particularly with Dionte Christmas now playing (and carrying illegal weapons) for the 76ers.
Dec 8 - Butler -- A marquee matchup in the Jimmy V Classic against a Preseason Top 10 (#10) at Madison Square Garden. Hopefully, the Hoyas take advantage of the game being played at their "second home", but Butler is going to be an extremely tough early test for these guys. This may be a battle of who can out-backdoor pass the other.
Dec 12 - Washington -- Four days after facing the #10 team in another former coach's "Classic", the team treks all the way across the country to play the #14 team in the John Wooden Classic in Anaheim, CA. If nothing else, at least our strength of schedule should be on par with last year's high standing. Just coming away with one win out of these two games would be an accomplishment...but at the very least, it should prepare out younger players for the impending rigors of life in the Big East.
Jan 30 - Duke -- The Blue Devils return to the Verizon Center for the first time since their #1 ranked 17-0 team was upset by a Georgetown group led by Brandon Bowman, Ashanti Cook, and the young trio of Jeff Green, Roy Hibbert, and Jonathan Wallace. That game let the rest of the nation in on the little secret that John Thompson III was keeping on the Hilltop and it officially marked our return to national prominence. This year's Duke squad is currently ranked #8.
Big East Schedule -- We face Villanova, Rutgers, and, of course, Syracuse twice this season. Nova is looking tough at #6 and Syracuse is currently #25. Other tough Big East opponents based on preseason hype include a trip to #9 West Virginia (with no Patrick Ewing, Jr. to save our butts this time), a home game against #14 UConn (to relive Hibbert's clutch three-pointer), a trip to #23 Louisville (featuring Rick Pitino's ever-changing wardrobe), and trips to face the always difficult Pitt Panthers and Marquette Golden Flashes (I think Dominic James finally finished his 7 years of eligibility).
Other notes -- The Hoyas tip off their season on the road at Tulane. The fact that this is a school that we've all heard of and it does not include a directional (Eastern, Southwestern, North, etc.), localized (-Eastern Shore, -Lafayette, -Santa Barbara, etc.), or fake state (Morgan State, Nicholls State, McNeese State, etc.) name means this game might be a little harder than our typical cakewalk opener. The only other non-conference away game is a trip to Savannah State (fake state!).
