Braves sign Furcal to play 2B

The Braves were interested in Rafael Furcal as a shortstop, back when they thought they were going to trade Yunel Escobar to the Padres in a Jake Peavy deal.

But when the Braves reached agreement late Monday night to bring Furcal back to Atlanta, it was as a second baseman. Furcal agreed to terms on a three-year deal, sources confirmed to CBSSports.com, with an option for a fourth year.

While Paul Kinzer, Furcal's agent, was telling people Tuesday that he was still talking to the Dodgers, the Braves firmly believe that Furcal has already chosen to play in Atlanta and that the deal that was agreed to will be completed.

The Braves plan to keep Escobar, according to officials familiar with their plans. After offering him to the Padres as the key to a deal for Peavy, the Braves are now determined not to trade him.

"It would take an act of Congress to get him moved now," one of the officials said.

There is a chance the Braves would trade Kelly Johnson, who played second base last year. But the immediate plan is for Johnson to play left field.

The Braves are still hoping to trade for another starting pitcher, although it's unlikely that they would revive talks for Peavy. Some Braves officials now look back and say they were fortunate the Padres broke off the Peavy talks last month. The feeling now is that the Braves would have given up too much in that proposed trade.

It is possible the Braves could solve their need for a starting pitcher through the free-agent market, but they're expected to explore trades first.

FOXSports.com first reported Furcal's decision to go to Atlanta.

If Braves get Furcal, he plays 2B

Actually, Frank Wren was quoted by the local Braves beat writer last week as saying that Kelly Johnson would not be moved back to LF.  His value is much higher as a second baseman and with Furcal back the Braves will likely move him in a trade for a starting pitcher.

I agree with you on the Escobar thing and it taking an act of congress to move him.  Braves sources have pretty much said that since the Peavy talks broke down.

Personally, I would love to see Furcal playing with a tomahawk across his chest again.  As a Brave, he had several clutch hits (including that game ending playoff homer), and played his heart out on the basepaths and in the field.
Go Braves 2009

Think about this infield:

1B: Casey Kotchman

2B: Furcal/Escobar (I think Escobar will play there)

SS: Furcal/Escobar

3B: Chipper

In my opinion thats a pretty darn good infield to be putting out there and you still have McCann behind the plate along with an extremely solid back-up in Ross. I personally think that getting Furcal makes Kelly Johnson even that much more expendable, although I along with other Braves fans are probably surprised that he's still in Atlanta. I would love to see Wren go out and pick-up some LF or SP help with Kelly Johnson because Kelly just isn't the answer for the Braves in LF either now or in any foreseeable future. I think a Johnson/Prospect for DeJesus (Royals) trade would be extremely beneficial for the Braves. The Braves would get a young 28 year-old left fielder, although whose power numbers aren't that impressive, but he has continuously had better seasons with a horrendous team. I mean last year he ended up with a line of .307/12 HR/73 RBI, not to shabby for a guy that played on a team that produced only 691 runs last season. On top of that, he's an extremely good defensive player with a .997 fielding percentage from last season. The more I think about it, the more I want DeJesus in the Braves outfield next season. Although it'll be interesting to see how Wren handles not only Johnson but the rest of the infielders (Prado and Infante) the Braves have on the roster.

Ouch.  I was kind of hoping the Mets would make a play for Furcal.  Infield does become a little crowded, but what a pickup if they pulled it off.

Something is gonna shake out of all this, and my belief is that one of the 3 mentioned will not be a Brave in 09!

WOW!! Furcal at 2nd, Yunel at ss now that sews the middle of the infield up(and then some). With there

range and arm strength  the Braves should lead the league in defensive plays, and with a little

time (double plays). Something K.Johnson never could quite perfect. This also allows us trade K.J. for a

certain LH SP with the Pirates, and have plenty of funds left to go out and sign a RH hitting outfielder to

slot in-between Chipper and Mac. WE need the LH SP to compete with all the Phillies LH hitters.

  2009 Lineup

2B Furcal

SS Yunel

3B Chipper

LF Free agent

C  Mac

1B Kotchman

RF Frenchy

CF Shaffer

Kelly Johnson may be better in LF though.  He committed the most errors in the infield for the Braves last year.
