Braves aren't interested in Lowe, Peavy

Even after getting rejected by A.J. Burnett, the Braves aren't expected to pursue Derek Lowe, and have little interest in rekindling Jake Peavy talks with the Padres, according to people familiar with their plans.

The Braves were never willing to guarantee a fifth year to Burnett, who took a five-year, $82.5 million offer from the Yankees instead.

Agent Scott Boras has told some teams he's looking for a similar deal for Lowe, and that at the minimum he would want four years at $16.5 million per year. The market for Lowe has shrunk some, because the Mets now consider him out of their price range, and the Phillies are no longer interested after re-signing Jamie Moyer. The Red Sox have been mentioned as a possibility, but they've balked at Boras' asking price.

The Braves have already acquired Javier Vazquez, but they came into the winter with a goal of adding two starters. They could go back into the trade market to try to find another pitcher, although teams that were looking said not many starters were available at last week's winter meetings.

The Braves thought last month that they were extremely close to a deal for Peavy, but got frustrated when the Padres tried to change the deal at the last minute. There's still enough bad blood between the two teams that it would be tough for them to get back together and complete a trade.

Towers is a piece of work.  No wonder the Padres don't make any progress toward postseason.

And talking about a piece of work, how about Boras.  I can understand trying to get the most for players, but 4 or 5 years at $16.5 per for LOWE?  Lowe is a fine pitcher, but he's no ace and doesn't deserve ace money.

If the Braves are not interested in Lowe or Peavy, then I am guessing that a staff of Jurgens, Vasquez, Reyes, and Morton are going to make the Braves contenders? If worse comes to worse they can bring back Glavine with his 80 mph fastball and his 75 mph changeup? How far have the mighty fallen? The Braves have not pitching, no offense, and a closer in Soriano that has never pitched an entire year without injuries. I love the Braves, but cannot stand to watch them much anymore. Too much of a similarity of the Braves of the 70's.

I understand your frustration with the Braves. But you can't blame them for not giving up everything for these two players. The asking price is just to much. We have to think about the future of the franchise. It really is not their fault; it is baseball's. They are allowing the players and their agents to dominate the sport. There really has to be a salary cap put into place, so every team will have a chance to compete year in and year out.

Well then Truth, who's bandwagon are you going jump on then?  The Yankee's, Red Sox....maybe the Angels if they sign Tex?
I've been watching the Braves since I was able to walk and I've never given up on them, and I certianly won't go root for another team just because they spend the most money or won the most recent World Series.
I would personally like to THANK Mr. Wren for NOT trading away all of our top players to bring in one or two free agents.  If you'll think back to say....the late 80's and early 90's, we gained our success by KEEPING our best talent and developing it, not trading it away, only adding key free agents to the talent we already had.  Adding free agents is a necessary thing this day in age but at what cost?  Not the whole farm system in my opinion.
Good luck finding a new team to root for....I hear the Yankee's have room on their bandwagon.  I'll stay right here and keep right on watching and rooting for my hometown team, the Braves.....win, or lose.

From what I hear Lowe is more concerned with the dollar per season value whereas Boras is concerned with the total value.
My guess is he signs a deal similar to what the Dodgers gave Jason Schmidt a few years back, 3 years 42-47 million.

I think the Braves made the right choice not selling the ranch to get Peavy.

And as for Lowe I dont think he is worth 10 a year let alone 15!

I think they should go out and get another hitter that can add 80-90 RBI'S a year

Who knows I'm sure just like every year someone will appear out of the dust and become a decent pitcher just like Dempster did for the Cubs.

The Braves are a well run team and always seem to figure things out and I think they will continue that trend this year.

Don't forget about John Smoltz and they could Re-Sign a healthy Mike Hampton (Not for nearly as much as his previous contract, of course..)
Also, Keep your eye on Tommy Hanson, who may well earn a spot in the rotation.. He was insane in Arizona's Fall League, becoming the first pitcher ever to win the league MVP, by compiling a 0.63 ERA, while striking out an amazing 49 batters in just 28 2/3 innings. He didn't allow more than 3 hits in any of his starts, and led the league with 5 wins. He also held opponents to a .105 batting average against.. Oh, and all of those stats were while he was working on adding a changeup.. Looks like it was a success and if he continues such a torrid pace, he could be an Ace in the MLB within 3 Seasons or less...

This is why the deal for Peavy never happened.. The Padres were asking for Tommy Hanson, and at the same time, Tommy Hanson was showing himself to be a near-future Ace for the Braves.. For that reason, I'm glad the Braves didn't give him up, because Hanson could very well be better than Peavy someday, and that day may not be all that far off.
