A Greinke trade? Unlikely

Rumors that the Royals would be willing to listen on Zack Greinke began circulating again this week, to the point where some people in baseball began wondering if he was about to be traded to the Braves.

The only problem with that is that two people who know Royals general manager Dayton Moore very well said that Moore has grown more and more fond of Greinke.

"He's more likely to sign him to a long-term contract than he is to trade him," one of the sources said (and the other agreed).

Moore is also said to have cooled on the idea of acquiring Jeff Francouer from the Braves. The Royals got Coco Crisp from the Red Sox last month, and apparently the only way they'd have interest in Francouer is if the Braves or someone else would take Jose Guillen ($24 million over the next two years).

A Greinke trade? Unlikely

Not sure how on earth trading Greinke would make sense.   Sure, given the season he had, Royals may get peak value, but in my opinion Greinke is a budding superstar, someone the Royals desparately need to build around.  As a Cardinals fan and if I were the Cards GM, I would be on the phone to Moore this afternoon offering a package including Rasmus for Greinke.

as a braves fan i'd like to see us obtain grienke but not at the expense of francouer this would be a bad trade for both teams the royals would lose an ace pitcher which it will make it very hard for them to win without, and the braves would lose a home product and very good defensive young outfielder who just had an off year but is very capable of making a carlos quentin type year in 09 plus they would have to take on jose guillen over the next 2 yrs for 24 million cmon bad trade all around...maybe if they forgot guillen and we gave em jo jo reyes or campillo or morton and a 2nd level prospect then i'd consider it if i was wren.

Do you realize how good Zack Greinke is and the fact that he is still in arbitration for 2 years? He would net a package not unlike what the A's got for Dan Haren last year. Reyes and a mid-level prospect is a joke. The Royals would be doing the Braves a favor trading Greinke for Francoeur, considering the years they had last year. Greinke is on the up, Francoeur is on the way down. Start with Yunel Escobar and a good prospect or two and your might have some interest from Dayton Moore. After all he knows the Braves' system better than half the people there.

There have to be 25 or so teams in baseball that would covet Greinke if the Royals were to make him available.  How do these teams improve by trading talent like this for prospects?  When do you take a shot to compete?  The Royals currently have Butler, Crisp, Alex gordon, Avila, Guillen, Dejesus,  a decent pen, and a fair rotation.  If they add some spare parts they could conceivably have a Tampa like run since their division is highly suspect.

More cluelessness from a major league franchise

What kool aid are you sipping? Comparing Zack Greinke to Dan Haren is absurd! There is no way that the Royals could net a package equivalent or better than what the Athletics got in return for trading Dan Haren AND Connor Robertson. Haren is an established and proven pitcher whereas Greinke is an average pitcher. The only way the Royals could net more in return for trading Greinke is if they trade with Ken Williams of the White Sox. He hates his prospects like the plague and will do whatever he can to deplete his organization of highly touted prospects. It seems that every time he makes a trade for a veteran player that he gives up 3 or 4 prospects in return. After doing so he complains about giving up too much. But then he does it again in the next trade he makes. Either he has poor memory or he is an idiot! Now if Zack Greinke is in fact the real deal and is capable of winning 20 games then the Royals should hold onto him for a year or two longer and then trade him for 10 prospects. The Royals are a sad organization who hasn't had a winning season since 1989. Only the Pirates are more inept. Trading one of their better players does not make sense in light of their recent ticket price increase. I can imagine Royals fans saying "Let's pay more to see the pathetic Royals. They are not competitive, but it's our duty to support these losers." Come on! Royals fans should be outraged. They should demand that Moore go out and add quality players to the team rather than subtract from it...lol. I often wonder if the Royals and Pirates ever had $200M to spend on payroll would they still be losers. The answer is yes! No matter how much a team has to work with if the guy running the team is incompetent than it will only result in a team full of overpaid and incompetent players. Let's hear it for Bud Selig for allowing such incompetence to flourish. A team should be penalized for fielding a poor quality team. Or they can take the team away from the owner.

"Greinke is an average pitcher". "Comparing Zack Greinke to Dan Haren is absurd!"
Greinke - 3.47 ERA, 13 W, 183 K, 1.28 WHIP. 5th in Ks and 10th in ERA. IN THE AL
Haren  - 3.33 ERA, 16 W, 206K, 1.13 WHIP. 2nd in Ks and 11th in ERA. IN THE NL
Did I mention Greinke is 25 and Haren is 28...

I rest my case.

And by the way, the Royals won 75 games last year and have improved every year since Dayton Moore took over as GM.
