2008 FIBA/Olympic BasketballSome general information: Olympic rosters are limited to 12 players, 5 fellow athletes who are allowed to travel with the team in addition to coaching staff, trainers, and medical staff. Some countries have already established their 12 player rosters (USA is set). Others are still working on rosters, especially those teams facing play-in games in July and teams with injury problems (Germany has lost 3 key players). In Olympic basketball, players are eliminated after 5 fouls, not 6. Usually, far more physical contact is allowed in international play, but there is still the concern of players fouling out more easily. There are four ten-minute quarters in the game. The basketball has fewer panels than the ball used in the NBA game so there is a different feel to the ball. It is legal to take the ball off the rim without getting a goal tending violation. For anyone interested, I will post a link to the official rules. There is one rule book for games officiated by 2 referees and a separate rule book for games refereed by 3 refs. International play will be moving toward 3 refs, but I'm not sure that 3 refs will be used in the 2008 Olympic games. |

2008 FIBA/Olympic BasketballI will post the rosters of the teams already qualified and the teams participating in the July play-in games. LET THE DEBATE BEGIN!! Would you change the USA roster and if so, who would you add and who would you remove? Personally, I'd rather see Tyson Chandler on the roster. We have only one true center in Dwight Howard, and he is playing with a fractured sternum. If injury or foul trouble occurs, I am not satisfied that we have a viable second option at that position. Should players who are not citizens of the country they are playing for be allowed to play for a country's national team? If you check the rosters, almost every team has players that are playing because they are under contract to a country's national team, regardless of whether they are citizens. There are many American college players on foreign rosters. There are American NBA players who did not make Team USA who are being given passports/dual citizenship to foreign countries so they can play. Chris Kamen of the Clippers will play for Germany; for the women's competition, the WNBA MVP, Becky Hammond, is not on the USA team; she will be playing for Russia. Other countries are doing the same thing--putting players on their rosters regardless of citizenship. Check the rosters! You may be surprised at who is playing for which countries. Not all rosters are set yet. Team USA's roster has been determined. |

2008 FIBA/Olympic BasketballOn rosters of other countries, I bolded the names of NBA players, noted/skilled foreign club players, and American college students. Note that detailed info is not available yet for all rosters; some rosters have yet to be trimmed to the 12 player limit. No, Player, Position, Age, Current Club These rosters may be changed. I'll post updates before the 8/8/08 Olympic games. I will post the rosters of the teams in the July play-in games. There is some scary talent on those teams as well. |

2008 FIBA/Olympic BasketballOfficial Olympic Qualifying Games, Athens, Day 1, 7/14/08 Group A Group B Group C Group D Notable happenings: The team from Cameroon still has not been paid or received equipment money from their government or from FIBA for last summer's participation in the FIBA Africa games. The team made a last minute decision to go ahead and play in the Olympic qualifiers anyway, for pride in the country and for their families. The UCLA players originally on their rosters were cut except for Alfred Aboya, who had a mediocre performance of 1 block, 1 turnover, 4 fouls and no points in 10 minutes of play. Cameroon plays Puerto Rico next (if they decide to keep playing) and is unlikely to move on to the second round of play. Cape Verde lost to New Zealand today and has to play Germany tomorrow, so it is not anticipated that they will qualify to move on to the next round of play. Rasho Nesterivic for Slovenia led the team with a good game. He played 32 of the 40 minutes in the game. His stat line: 26 points, 9 rebounds, 1 turnover, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 assist, 3 fouls, 72% shooting from 2 point range, no free throws given, no 3 point shots taken. When asked about his intention to play for the NBA next year, Slovenia's Goran Dragic (drafted by the Spurs and traded to the Suns) gave this quote after the game: “I don’t know,” Dragic said. "San Antonio drafted me but then traded me to Phoenix, and there would also have to be a buyout at my club, Tau (Ceramica). It would be great to play in Phoenix and learn from a point guard like Steve Nash. We’ll see.” Dragic wasn’t sure if he’d make it over (to the NBA) this year. (Nice job, Steve Kerr!) Greece and Croatia are expected to qualify for the Olympics (there are only 3 spots remaining, and Germany, Brazil, Canada, and Puerto Rico are also in contention for those 3 spots). Greece has remained undefeated in all preliminary games and the first day of qualifying games. Greece plays Brazil on Wednesday--that should be a good game. Tomorrow's games: |

2008 FIBA/Olympic BasketballOfficial Olympic Qualifying Games, Athens, Day 2, 7/15/08 Group A Group B Group C Group D Notable happenings: The team from Cameroon put in their bench in the second half and closed the game to 3 points (70-67) at one point. They had a much better showing today than yesterday, but it doesn't look as if they will advance to the next round. Canada must beat Korea tomorrow to clinch one of the spots moving on to the next round. Chris Kamen made his debut as a player for Germany today. He had not played international ball so the feel of the ball and the rules were very different for him. He is on a team that has played together for 10 years, but he fit in well for his first game with Dirk Nowitzki's team. Tomorrow they play New Zealand, which should be a far more competitive game. Brazil will face off with Greece on Wednesday, which should be another good game. I noticed that Leandro Barbosa of the Phoenix Suns, who plays for Brazil, is not on the roster for the official games. I'm still looking for a reason why he isn't on the roster--injury, pressure from the Suns, cut from the team, etc. Curious, because he was a team leader and scored well in last summer's FIBA Americas tournament. After tomorrow's games, the quarter finals begin Thursday. |
