Titans Looking Young Again!

RBISPORTS - The Tennessee Titans began the season with high expectations and hopes of repeating as AFC South Champions and why not?  They were 13-3, the best record in the NFL in 2008 and had everybody returning.  Well, almost everybody if you don't count the departure of Albert Haynesworth.  No need to put the franchise tag on him, we have Bo Scaife. How has that worked out? Bo Scaife has played in six games has 165 yards receiving on 18 catches.  Haynesworth has played in all 8 games for the Washington Redskins, has 25 tackles, 3 sacks, and a fumble recovery.  Did I mention he has played in all 8 games?  Of course I should also mention that Andre Carter for the Redskins has 6.5 sacks and this is for only half a season.  Carter had four sacks all last year.  Carter is on track to break or match his career season record of 12.5 sacks in 2002.  Even if the Redskins look bad, the addition of Haynesworth has helped their defensive front line.
Nevermind the mistake of letting Haynesworth go. Perhaps the biggest loss of all was the departure of Jim Schwartz to become head coach of the Detroit Lions.  As a result of his departure, plus a plethera of injuries to the all-pro defensive backfield, and the lack of a consistent pass rush, the Titans instead of looking young looked just plain old n starting the season 0-6.  Even Collins seemed to age five years over an off season.  But the good news is the Titans are starting to look young again, Vince Young in fact.
The first round draft choice began the season as an after thought, an albatross, a liability and fans were in some cases admonent he be let go.  Then there where others that said why don't we see more of Vince?  Even in the pre-season what we saw of Vince's performance was hardly promising. So what has happened to make people in Tennessee believing they can have another 10 game winning streak and finish the season 10-6?  The answer is love him or hate him Vince Young. I thought it interesting that in four games this season he has a 64.3 completion percentage. He has thrown 1 INT, 1TD, and run for another. Looking at the stats you see 1-1-1 but the bigger stat is that he is back and the Titans are 2-0 with Young as a starter.
It is hard to say what his overall future with the Titans will be. It might be equally hard to figure what Coach Fisher's future may be. We kinow the owner made this call. The question on my mind is what call will the Titans make at the end of the season.  The Titans are famous for letting good talent go before they have actually reached their prime or not keeping legends around like Steve McNair, Eddie George, and don't forget Derick Mason. However, they did bring back Jevon Kearse and now they have a decision on what to do with two QBs.  All I know the Titans are looking Young again and they are 2-0.  Winning never grows old.

Titans Looking Young Again!

The win had less to do with Vince Young, than it did with the teams played.  However, the Titans going forward have a lot of money tied up in Young (Signed at six-years, $58 million), and given that this season is all but a wash at this point, it makes little sense to continue with Kerry Collins.

We do know this, Jeff Fisher wants Collins at the helm, the owner Young.  That is always a bad thing, and could see fisher ushered to the door after the season.  Of course, if the Titans can play exceptional the rest of the way, score a wild card birth, and advance in the post season, it is possible for all three parties to win.

Collins however, going on 37 years old, is all but done.

Even though you will not see many games where young throws for three hundred yards. vince is there franchise qb for now, he is the face of the titans for the next 8 years, and then that is when the titans will do there regular thing and release him when he is really hitting stride. i found it hard to believe that the titans after losing their first three games still manages to stick with kerry collins, after benching young last year after one game. vince young was the afc rookie of the year, so the talent is there. the titans do nothing but win with young at the helm. while its true young had a mental melt down last year which more then likely the reason why fisher was not as confident to throw young back on the field. but people have meltdowns and peoplebounce back. i think also that young will play more inspired ball since he is playing the game now not just for himself but he is playing to keep the memory of his mentor steve mcnair.

lastly if the titans do not win every single game leftg, and make the playoffs i do believe that fisher will be fired based on the friction between him and grant, both men are at crossroads on team philosophy and its not normally in a coach's facor when he is not on the same page as the owner, a.k.a marty schottenheimer

Titans Looking Young Again!

Titans fans can't dispute, the fact that Vince Young is a winner.  It amazes me his ability to manage a game, even when his head wasn't completely in it.  Titans fans couldn't possibly think that Kerry Collins was the answer.  It amazes more how QBs are able to play over their head when money is on the line.  Cleveland Browns fans can relate to that with Derek Anderson.

Vince Young was never a great college passer, that was evident coming out of Texas.  However, he was a tremendous athlete, with the ability to throw the ball on occasion, and make plays with his feet.  With a few more games of experience, the Titans will be just fine with Vince Young under center.  They have an abundance of talent, on the offensive side of the ball, signing Nate Washington, and the ability of Justin Gage to spread the field, and not to mention the freak of nature Chris Johnson.

Bottom line is this, Vince Young is a winner, he will find a way to win. He did it in college, watch the championship game against USC. Even without the talent the Titans would be fine.  I think there is a strong chance the Titans could still finish over .500 for the year.

For those of you who are waiting for next years draft, there is a young man coming out with similar qualities.  If you are lucky enough to land Tim Tebow.  You might just get the same type of player.  Not a great thrower, but a great athlete, and a winner!!

I agree with you on Vince Young being a great athlete, but not a great QB....  Maybe if Vince Young could study the tapes of an old Philidelphia Eagles QB from the late 80's........ He might be a better player, and also dangerous like Randall Cunningham... But Tennesse Titans should not waist money on another QB now, they need to really invest time in Young to see where he goes and if he really gets better by the year's end, then maybe they might have something, but I don't think they need another high paid player to sit the bench, in the likes of Tim Tebow.. but they might need a bad defense, and maybe start at the D-line, when they lost A. Haynesworth, they really went down hill....Can one player really be that vital?????  looks like he was, look at Tennesse's record now and last year this time....what a big difference a year and a player makes, huh.....

Titans Looking Young Again!

I enjoyed Kerry Collins at QB last year but the team is not the same make up, from last year. Our secondary has always been a little shaky, we have gotten knocked out of the playoffs twice for that reason. I just feel that now that we don't have that same pass rush and our defense is not the same as it once was, Vince Young does give us the best chance to win right now. I mean he is not more accurate than Kerry Collins but his mobility is an X factor, that defenses have to game plan for and repect now. Kerry Collins can't keep throwing to our sub par recievers, until Kenny Britt develops. Don't worry, hopefully Sam Bradford will slip to us in the draft and we won't have to worry about this next year.

Vince Young does give us the best chance to win right now. I mean he is not more accurate than Kerry Collins???

This Year

Kerry Collins 54.8 completion percentage
Vince Young 65.7 completion percentage

Over their careers

Kerry Collins 55.7% (13 years below 60% only two above)
Vince Young 58% (only 1 year below 60%, 3 years above 60%)

So now that this is proven to be a blatant lie anything else you want to talk about?

Seriously though if you would have said Collins is a better "decision maker" than Young I would agree with you... Collins has played for 14 years whereas Young has played for 3 so hopefully over that time he would learn not to force the ball.

One other thing.... through their first 3 years in the league... VY had 32 INTS..... Collins had 49, even if Vince would have thrown 15 ints had he played in every game last year it still woudn't have matched Collins INT total

That's what I am talking about. Stats and facts.  Vince Young seems to be improving each week and the Titans along with him.  Interestingly enough there is one dynamic everyone has missed.  Chris Johnson has exploded with Young at the helm.  In the last three games Chris Johnson has:

228 yds
135 yds
132 yds
495 yds

In the first five games of the season he had about 458 yds.  In game 6 his four straight weeks of over 100 yds began.  Even with the 128 yds in game six, you have to believe that Vince has changed the whole offensive dynamic.  VY is also at least for the moment looked like he has made some real improvements in his passing game. I believe VY is back next season, but the verdict on Fisher is perhaps for the first time, in question.
