New deal on horizon for Vikes' Childress

A contract extension is in the works for Minnesota coach Brad Childress, with a new deal possible within the next two to three weeks.

That would make sense because a) the Vikings are off to their first 6-0 start since 2003, b) they've improved each year under Childress and c) they have a bye after their next two games.

There had been speculation that Childress' contract would not be addressed until after the season, but his agent, Bob LaMonte, was seen at Sunday's Vikings-Ravens game, and sources close to the club said he was there partly to see Childress and partly to negotiate a new deal.

Childress is in the fourth year of a five-year contract and was supposed to be under a Win-or-Else ultimatum this season. Well, he's won, and while management does not have to address his situation immediately it appears it will. One source said an extension is so close that an announcement could come early next month, but another indicated that nothing is "imminent."

Maybe, but it sure looks as if something will be done at or around mid-season. Childress' success seems to have resonated with the team's owner, Zygi Wilf, who has seen the club go from six to eight to 10 wins in Childress' first three seasons. Now at 6-0, it's safe to assume the Vikings will exceed Childress' 10 victories of last year. The hitch, of course, is that two of their toughest games this season are the two taking them into the bye -- at Pittsburgh and at Green Bay. But when I asked one source what obstacle could sabotage a potential deal I was told, "nothing." We'll see.

New deal on horizon for Vikes' Childress?

I oppose this move if he keeps calling plays by picking them out of a hat.

New deal on horizon for Vikes' Childress?

First of all, the Vikings went 6-0 in 2003 also. However, who remembers how that season ended? That's right, we somehow missed the playoffs.

Did we not learn a lesson from that? We should definitely wait until the season is actually over to determine how good our team actually is. We are going to look like morons if we sign him to a contract extension, and then we lose in our first playoff game or somehow manage to miss the playoffs again. Sure, Childress has gone out and gotten great personnel for the team, but as a gameday coach, he makes some idiotic decisions at times.

Also, he says that it is safe to assume we exceed 10 wins since we are 6-0 huh? Well, we somehow managed to go 9-7 in 2003 after the 6-0 start.

New deal on horizon for Vikes' Childress

This team hasn't exactly blown out it's opponents, played down to lower competition, let big leads slip away...this team is far more talented than it has showed...I would attribute much of this to coaching.
Childress has the energy and people skills of a pet rock.  Remember, this guy came in as a first time head coach from Andy reid's regiem...he was the offensive coordinator.  AKA...the guy on the sidelines looking confused as Andy Reid called the offensive plays.  This team will go no where under his guidance and the fans simply don't want him here.  They are squeeking out wins against Detroit, Cleveland and San Francisco as well as blowing a 17 point lead in the 4th quarter to the Ravens, come playoff time this team will fail unless the coaching really improves.

That's good, only from the aspect that it shows Ziggy is committed. That means that he must be committed to continuing to owning the team and continuing to have them in MN. If he was too frustrated by the stadium issue and was looking to sell, he wouldn't want a long-term (potentially expensive)  deal to weigh down the price.

New deal on horizon for Vikes' Childress

The only reason that this is not waiting until the end of the season is because of who is initiating talks???  Brad Childress is smart, because talking now is his best chance at getting the Vikings to re-sign him.  He knows that his chances would be slim to none if the team some how blows this lead.  Why are they talking now?  6-0...that is why.

New deal on horizon for Vikes' Childress

Anyone that has watched the Vikes for the past few years knows that Childress is one of the worst in-game coaches there is in the game.  I will give him credit for getting Favre.  Lets not forget, this was to cover up his mistake for giving away a draft pick and drafting T-Jack.  The major reason why the Vikes are 6-0 is because of Rick Spielman and the rest of the scouts that are involved in the draft process.  Also credit needs to be given to Mr.Wilf.  I'm a season ticket holder and a few weeks back they introduced him at half time of a game.  Mr. Wilf was present to give Randall McDaniel his Hall of Fame ring.  What does the crowd do?  They BOOED him.  Talk about a bunch of morons.  Whatever the Vikes have needed as far as personal, he has given the green light to aquire the player.  Why would you boo him?   I try to warn younger Vikes fans, the pain is coming.  I remember all four Super Bowl loses.  As we get further into the season and hopefully the playoffs, you will all see that Childress is in over his head.  The questionable decisions in all facets of the game will be to much for the Vikes superior talent to overcome.  Vikes fans, you have been warned...........,.

New deal on horizon for Vikes' Childress

Childress' play calling is awful.  If I had Favre and Peterson I'd be 6-0 as well.  He sucks and should never sign an extension.  Next year, without Favre, we are an 8-8 team at best.
