It's Quinn's time

Now that Brady Quinn is back in as the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, it begs this question:

Why did they sit him down in the first place?

Quinn did not play well when he opened the season as the starter, which is why Derek Anderson replaced him as starter in Week Four. The Browns had to know they had a lock-on, not-scan-the-field passer in Anderson.

Did they know what they had in Quinn? Do they now?

Quinn's strengths are seeing the field and understanding the passing game. He doesn't have a big arm, which Anderson does. Maybe the big arm seduced the Browns, but does it matter if he has no one who can get deep?

The thing that disappointed the Browns was that Quinn didn't make the right reads when he was starting. If he doesn't do that, his arm can't compensate. He's then just a guy, on his way to bust-ville.

There are some who will say Quinn was benched in large part so the Browns could avoid paying him bonus money. I don't buy that. This is a team that spent $40 million to jettison the last front office and coaching regime and to re-do the team's facility at coach Eric Mangini's request.

Sitting Quinn down was a football decision. A bad one.

Now they have to make it right. They have to spend the rest of this season finding out if Quinn can be their long-term passer. If not, they have to go into the draft next April and get one. Somehow you can see Mangini thinking Chad Pennington could be his guy. He's a free agent, but that's not a good fix. They need a franchise passer, not a lollypop-armed quarterback who can't get the ball down the field.

Next spring that could mean taking Oklahoma's Sam Bradford or Washington's Jake Locker in the first round, or somebody who can win in the passing game. So far, the Browns have been dreadful throwing the football.

It isn't all on the quarterbacks. They have few weapons outside and they haven't played well on the offensive line.

Cleveland is averaging 121.5 yards per game passing, last in the NFL. In this era of wide-open football, that's pathetic. The rules mandate you must throw it now to win. The Browns haven't -- or can't.

In Quinn's four games, including three starts, he completed 59.7-percent of his passes, but threw one touchdown and three interceptions. He didn't take many chances, instead taking safe, check-down throws. His average per attempt was 5.3, which pales in comparison to the top passers who are over 8.0.

Quinn has to show that he's willing to take shots. Playing safe doesn't win. If Quinn doesn't show more an inclination to take shots, the Browns will have a new quarterback next year and it won't be Anderson, who they've soured on.

Mangini is making the right decision going back to Quinn, but the wrong one was sitting him down in the first place.

"In Quinn's four games, including three starts, he completed 59.7-percent of his passes, but threw one touchdown and three interceptions"

This is what the author said, and it is exactly right.  Quinn has played in 4 games and started 3, completing 59.7 percent of his throws. No where does the article say that Quinn started week 4...clearly Anderson did, but Quinn has in fact played in 4 games so you need to read the article before criticizing his facts.

That said, it does not matter who plays QB for the Browns if they can't pass protect and have no one to throw the ball to downfield.

That is true, however paying the last front office and redoing the facility does not count against the salary cap does it? 11 million in cap space is the reason that Quinn was benched, or at least the reason he remained benched till now.

It's Quinn's time

Agreed.  What makes you think the $11 million had no impact?  Doesn't it seem a little coincidental that once Quinn becomes ineligible for the bonus, they jump right back to him?  I know Anderson has the worst passer rating in the league... but he did two weeks ago as well.

It looks like another example of just how far the Cleveland Browns franchise has fallen this year.

I don't know why my original post was deleted (I'm pretty ticked about that) but the blog originally said that Anderson replaced Quinn in Week 5, not Week 4.  That was my complaint.  Yes, Quinn technically played in the Browns last game against Chicago (a whopping 1 series), but Prisco was obviously mistaken by saying that Anderson took over in Week 5.  Prisco made some decent points here, but when he doesn't do his basic fact-checking he's hurting his own credibility.

Brett Ratliff

There is no good choice between Quinn and Anderson. Both are not good. Brett Ratliff might actually be the best QB on that Browns roster, and I'd be surprised if we didn't see him before the year was out.

Will Mangini even be around to make a run at Pennington next spring? I wouldn't bet on it.

Not the QB's Fault

I will start now by saying I wanted Quinn to be named the starter of the 2009 season.

And yes he did not play well...

Lets try Anderson, he was good one year.

And yes he did not play well...

So, is it that we have bad QB's or do we have bad Coach's?

If you think that we have bad QB's...
Then how come Anderson almost broke Cleveland's franchise record for TD's in a season and went to the Pro Bowl?
If you think Quinn is bad, then how come he broke every Notre Dame record and the team hasn't been remotely good since he left?

If Quinn (Woulda' Coulda') never got hurt last year... is Crennel still our coach this year? He did get hurt and the coach got fired.

SO

What has the new coach done to improve the QB's performance? Was it with the vote of confidence in the offseason when he wouldn't name a starter?
Was it when he had both QB's share 'Valuable' preseason practice snaps when switching to a new system?
Was it when he told the media that when he selected a QB he would stick with him 'NO MATTER' what?
Was it when he depleted the team of veteran leadership?
Was it when he shipped off the only two offensive weapons we've had since 99?
Was it when he got rid of players for the sake, they weren't his players?
Was it when he stated to alienate his players with harsh work environment and then tell everyone, if you don’t like it come talk to me attitude?
Was it when he kept 2 QB's on the roster knowing that the starter could never play loosely fearing they would lose their starting positions to the other QB sitting on the bench refusing to be a team player and not helping or supporting the current starter? (mouth full)

So

Do we really have bad QB's or do we have a Bad COACH?

I think BAD COACH!!!
