Miles to Memphis? Bad idea

The Memphis Grizzlies finally look like something close to a professional basketball team, having won three straight after coach Marc Iavaroni benched Rudy Gay. Now Yahoo! Sports has reported that someone in Memphis has come up with the idea to sign former No. 3 overall pick Darius Miles to a minimum contract.

I ask, why? And I say, bad idea.

With five NBA coaches already shown the door before Christmas, Iavaroni was hanging on by a thred in Memphis. This despite starting three rookies at times and having a team with an average age that is comparable to that of the Memphis Tigers. (This from a person familiar with the team's situation who did the math.)

The players were looking for structure and direction, and Iavaroni gave it to them when he benched Gay, whose tendency to perform a solo act didn't sit well with his teammates.

Now, with a roster spot cleared after a three-team trade that sent Javaris Crittenton to Washington, the Grizzlies evidently have decided that the best use of that roster spot is to fill it with Miles, who has not played since 2006 due to a debilitating knee injury. Miles also will be suspended for the first 10 games he's on an active roster for violating the league's anti-drug policy.

"When it ends -- and it doesn't end well, because he never does with Darius -- all it can do is blow up the team," a person familiar with the Grizzlies' situation said.

If the signing goes through, the result could be devastating for another team -- Miles' previous one, Portland. The Trail Blazers got a retired player exception when they waived Miles after last season and his injury was determined to be career-ending. But if MIles, 27, plays 10 games for someone else this season, the Blazers will have to account for the $18 million remaining on Miles' contract against the salary cap. It would remove what little flexibility the Blazers' have in free agency over the next two years.

I am going to have to disagree with you...The first reason is although Darius does not have a great tract record for doing the smartest things he is still not a T.O....How many teams has his guy actually blown up? Let’s see ummm none! Although he was not a good influence in Portland he never blew the team up...sorry it just didn't happen...you are gross over exaggerating the situation in Portland. Let’s not forget Both Damon Stoudamire And Zach Randolph had run ins with the law in Portland as well so you cannot give the entire blame of the Portland situation to Miles... If I'm not mistaken he stayed pretty clean in Cleveland with his time with the Lebron...not to mention he hasn't been in trouble in a long time since being hurt...I say give him a chance with a minimum contract if it doesn't work release him and move on...If it does you have a potentially good player...You give a high school guy tons of money and some bad guidance and there is a possibility for accidents along the way....Give him a shot...

I have tried giving him a chance, but he posts the least important stories about the NBA.  Who wants to hear about Darius Miles going to the Memphis Grizzlies?  NOBODY!!!!  I'm sure the Grizzlies fans could care less too.  They've probably never even heard of the guy.

Mepmphis isnt going anywhere this year, so why not give the kid a chance? He should never get to play again, becuase Portland dumped his salary? Miles has made some bad choices, but I sure dont see him destroying a young Memphis team.

Personally Delighted

Mr. Miles is my favorite basketball player of all time and deserves the chance. He has exhibited a great attitude toward coming back for years, with Celts' Danny Ainge even saying he'd have him on the team if they weren't so stacked already! I hope he does well and I can hopefully add a jersey to my collection... Best Christmas gift I could have...except a Miles-to-Sixers deal!

It's a good idea for one simple reason.  Portland is the up and coming team in the West.  If Memphis hurts the Blazer's cap number for 2 more years, this is a good idea.

Play Miles for 11 games in a reserve role and then release him.

Berger is hands-down better than Mejia, and much better than that jacka$$ who did their NBA stuff last year.  This guy actually appears to do his homework, and to have some credible sources.  I thought Miles with Boston would be a HUGE mistake, tho Garnett would've slapped his a$$ straight if he got out of hand, no doubt, butputting this guy on a young influential team with a coach who already has more than enough to deal with???  Why not just fire the coach now and declare Memphis a free-fire zone?  The only reason someone would give this guy a chance would be to hurt Portland's cap room, but if someone did that play himeleven games then release him deal they should be on the hook for his salary.  No reason to penalize Portland because this guy is a moron.

Why not? The Grizzlies have absoultely nothing to lose, and he could come back with a vengance.

About the Portland thing, I do find it disgusting that they are hoping he doesn't come back healthy just because of money, damn shame.

Let the man play.

Miles to Memphis? Bad idea

Miles is a great idea!  He's only 27 and, just a couple of years ago, was one of the most promising stars in the league.  He was on some teams with terrible situations at the time, (Clippers, Trailblazers, Cavs).  I knew he would not fit in with Boston when they signed him.  I'm excited to see Memphis making some bolder moves.  Their management has been criticized every step of the way, but are continuing to shut people up, and I love it!  Critics love asserting their "expertise" when most of them have little talent themselves, yet lots of opinions.  Well guess what? We all have opinions!  If Memphis gets Walker off the roster (win-win situation) and sign another promising star, good role playing vet, or the like, then I see the Grizzlies making tremendous strides. That core of players is getting stronger by the day.  Cousins Ross and Arthur were the steals of the year so far; the Mayo trade was the trade of the year; and they finally have a gritty center for the future in young Gasol. Lowry, Conley and even Milicic (and Iavoroni) are learning their roles, and Rudy G and Mayo are taking care of the rest. Berger, do your thing, criticize, it's ok.  I knew everbody wouldn't think this was a great idea.  Many didn't think Mayo for Love/Miller was a great idea either. Mayo's on recordbreaking pace!
