Amid Irish talk, Gators' Meyer says Notre Dame not an option

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Standing behind the same podium where quarterback Tim Tebow delivered his now-famous promise 14 months and 21 wins ago, coach Urban Meyer vowed Monday to be at Florida "as long as they'll have me."

With rumors swirling about Charlie Weis' future at Notre Dame, Meyer squashed any potential speculation about leaving Gainesville for South Bend, Ind.

"I'm ready to dispel it," Meyer said. "I'm going to be the coach at Florida as long as they'll have me. So I want to make that clear."

Meyer was an assistant at Notre Dame from 1996 to 2000, working under coach Lou Holtz. Meyer got his first head-coaching job a year later, turning around Bowling Green and doing the same at Utah two years later.

He was Notre Dame's top choice to replace Ty Willingham in 2004, but Meyer chose Florida over the Fighting Irish. He later acknowledged that Notre Dame was still his "dream job."

Five years at Florida have changed his feelings.

In his most emotional news conference since shedding a few tears following a loss at LSU in 2005, Meyer paused three times when talking about the final home game for a senior class that includes the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner.

He paused about a half minute the first time, staring down the entire time and thumping the podium twice.

"No more interviews this week, man," said Meyer, who is 55-9 at Florida and has won two of the past three national championships. "This is going to be a tough week."

It got even tougher when asked about Michael Guilford, a walk-on who died in a motorcycle crash in Oct. 2007. Guilford would have been a senior this year. Meyer, following another pause, said Guilford's family will be honored with the rest of the seniors before Saturday's game against rival Florida State.

"He's a part of this group," Meyer said. "That really stung this football team. He's got a terrific family. We're going to try to do the best we can to make that family feel at peace with what he did here. He was a phenomenal young man and a phenomenal member of this team. So he'll be part of senior day."

Meyer paused one more time, composing himself after he was asked about the impact Tebow has had on him. Tebow inspired Meyer to take his family on a mission trip to Central America.

"The one thing about Tim is his unselfishness, and his mission outside of college football is unparalleled as far as I'm concerned," said Meyer, holding back tears. "The impact that he's made, it's almost like selflessness is now a cool thing. Kids realizing to give back and if you can brighten someone's day, you do it. The impact that he's made on this team is phenomenal and as coaches, it's very noticeable behind closed doors, more than probably what you guys see. It's a significant impact."

Tebow wasn't nearly as emotional when talking about his final home game. But he was adamant that Meyer would be in Gainesville a long time.

"I don't think he'll be at Notre Dame. I don't think that's anything he'll do now. I don't think he'll do that ever," Tebow said. "I don't think he's really interested. I think he's enjoying his time here. I think he's enjoying being the head coach at the University of Florida and enjoying this senior class and being undefeated; we've won 21 in a row.

"He loves his players, and I don't think he wants to go to a place where he has to start fresh."

Tebow added that he would consider coaching at Florida down the road, once his playing days are over. Meyer first mentioned the possibility a few years ago.

"He actually always gives me a hard time about that, saying one day how I'm going to be in his seat and coaching here," Tebow said. "I don't know. That's something that intrigues me ... being able to coach them as far as life experiences and football.

"I like being able to correlate the two. ... I think I'd enjoy it. That door will never be closed for me."

Let me first say I don't think Urban Meyer will leave, and that Saban's situation is different, among other reasons, because he was not having the success at the pro level that Meyer is with the Gators.

But I wouldn't be totally shocked if he did end up going to Notre Dame.  Amid rampant speculation that he was taking the Alabama coaching job, Nick Saban said the followin

Here is my take as a Irish fan....   Urban is not coming, even though,  this is strictly rumor from somebody I know in the program (school).... a contract is alread drawn up for urban.... granted it could be the long standing contract he was given 6 years ago to become the coach but here is why he snubbed them the first time and will not go now (for that matter, any top rated coach) ...(more)

This is a article from SI.com.. I didn't post the entire article because you only needed to read the most important part..

Notre Dame is in same place as it was when Weis was hired: 6-5

So a change seems inevitable. Domers will flood the blogosphere with breathless tales of Urban Meyer's lifelong love for Notre Dame and Bob Stoops' disi ...(more)

Meyer in my mind is making the right choice by staying at UF. The Notre Dame head coaching postion, while it is one of the highest paying coaching spots around, has the most stress and is the always a hot seat. Any coach who goes there is blasted every time the team does not win the Nat'l Championship. Notre Dame has to realize that untill they turn down the pressure and expectiations they plac ...(more)

I can't imagine any other 6-5 strugglin school that would even be CONSIDERED in the running for a coach like Urban Meyer in the situation he is currently in, producing Heisman after Heisman, Nat'l Championship team after Nat'l Championship team, consistently in the top 10 recruiting, top 5 ranking in the country pretty much all of the time.  The possibility is remote that he leaves Florida ...(more)

If Meyer does leave Florida for ND then I think Jim Harbaugh will be the most likely person to take over the job at Florida and i dont think Florida would lose that much. It is a powerhouse program that attracts top level talent no matter what and with the recruiting class Harbaugh has brought to Stanford coming next year, it wont be a step down. Look at what Harbaugh has done to the Stanford prog ...(more)

But your school is not going to get Urban Meyer or Bob Stoops.  I have heard both rumors and neither are going to happen.  Why would a smart coach leave a great thing?  Both men have NC, heisman winners and recruits that want to play for them.  So they would give this up to go to Notre Dame where they would have a harder time recruiting and not just because Notre Dame has ...(more)

He said the exact same words at Utah, and Bowling Green.

Yet his contract at Utah specifically gave him an option to leave if Notre Dame came calling.

With Tebow leaving........... I bet he considers, but he has it pretty good in Florida.

Unlike Saban's sneaky departure for Alabama, or Rodriguez running out of town for Michigan, there is absolutely, positively, now way that Urban Meyer will change his mind about wanting to stay at Florida as long as they are willing to have him.

Nick Saban was not going anywhere in the NFL with the Miami Dolphins while he was there, and Rich Rodriguez was not going to win a BCS National

Seriously?  Why would he leave possibly the best college football coaching gig in the country to go to Notre Dame?  He makes $4 million per year and has a chance to win BCS titles every year while at Florida (notice they aren't real National Championships since college football is the only sport the NCAA doesn't crown a champion but that is for another thread).

Back then Florida hadn't won a National Championship in almost 10 years, hadn't won an SEC in four years and was treading water.  ND was mediocre but had an upper class team coming back with Brady Quinn leading it.  They hadn't lost to Navy in about 40 years.

NOW, UF has won 2 of the last 3 BCSs, 2 of 3 SECs, and hhas a 21 game winning streak.  If UF can win their next th

Meyer should not leave for the same obvious reason Steve "Lake" Spurrier shouldn't have left Florida, years ago:  He's got maybe the best gig in all of college football.  Meyer is king in Florida (after all, he might win his THIRD championship this year!).  Yeah yeah yeah, i know about looking for new challenges and all that other stuff.  But it's idiotic.  The S ...(more)

Notre Dame is like the most desirable head coaching position in the entire country.  He just doesn't want to distract his team in the middle of a BCS run.  Don't get it twisted folks.

Urban Meyer should go to Notre Dame. Here is why:

1. Notre Dame will pay him more than Florida

2. Meyer was a great but not elite coach until he got Tebow. What happens if he struggles to be a top program after he loses one of the top 5 players of all time?

3. In addition to Tebow, he has to replace half his offense and almost all of his D. UF has been dominan
