Michigan failed to file mandatory practice logs

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- College football's winningest program just took another hit off the field.

The University of Michigan released embarrassing details of an internal audit Monday that discovered Rich Rodriguez's team failed to file forms tracking how much time players spent on football during the 2008 season -- his first -- and the offseason last spring.

Perhaps coincidentally, the NCAA and the school are investigating the program about similar issues. The NCAA sent the school's president a notice of inquiry last month, saying it plans to complete its investigation by Dec. 31.

"I don't know what the NCAA is going to find," athletic director Bill Martin said in an interview with the Associated Press on Monday, before the audit was released. "I do know this is not academic fraud or gambling.

"I'm not involved with the investigation. It's being handled by our general counsel. We're the ones who picked up the phone to call the NCAA about this."

The audit was completed months ago, but the details surfaced during Ohio State week because they are part of the agenda for Thursday's board of regents meeting.

Rodriguez has said he and his coaches know and follow NCAA rules.

University spokeswoman Kelly Cunningham said Rodriguez would not make a statement about the audit, saying he and school officials are limited in what they can say because of the ongoing investigation.

"The president and the [regents] take very seriously all audits conducted at the university," the school said. "We will take all necessary steps to insure the integrity of all of the university's programs."

Michigan's season has been filled with challenges on and off the field.

The Detroit Free Press, citing anonymous football players, reported in August that Michigan was exceeding NCAA limits regarding practices and workouts.

The Wolverines started the season with four consecutive wins, but have stumbled and now have lost six of seven.

If Michigan doesn't upset the ninth-ranked Buckeyes on Saturday at home, it will fail to quality for a bowl for a second season in a row under Rodriguez after enjoying a postseason streak that lasted three-plus decades.

The audit looked into compliance areas for several Michigan teams, including the football and men's basketball programs. Auditors reviewed practice logs for a week during the season and a week in the offseason.

It found "a concern" that the football program failed to file monthly Countable Athletically Related Activities forms created by the school to track how much players work out and practice as a tool to comply with NCAA rules.

"The regular season forms still have not been submitted," the office of university audits wrote to Rodriguez in a letter dated July 24. "All other varsity sports submitted their CARA forms timely."

The report did not find issues of noncompliance, but acknowledged the practice logs for football were not available to be reviewed when the audit was conducted. The forms are now turned in on a timely basis, according to the school.

"The audit does not identify where the system broke down," a school statement read, "and it did not identify any other areas of concern with respect to the football program."

Rodriguez signed a six-year deal last year worth $2.5 million per season.

According to his contract, Rodriguez can be fired for cause if the NCAA, the Big Ten or the school determines he has committed a major violation of NCAA rules or he has intentionally committed any other type of violation of NCAA rules.

If the school completes a four-step process to fire Rodriguez for cause, it "shall be without liability to Rodriguez," according to the contract he signed Oct. 24, 2008.

The guy came in and changed the entire offense last year and the teams entire makeup.  This team would have been a perfect fit for Terrelle Pryor.  He's more suited for this offense for sure.  Anyhow, the reality is that it takes a coach about 3 years to get it right in any situation when a team is on a downslide and you insert a brand new offense.  Michigan will be fine.  ...(more)

Well it is official... some U-M fans are jumping off the RichRod train now that he is not 4-0 any longer.

Funny thing is, there sure seems to be a split amongst the U-M fan base:

1.  Those who are U-M alumni (the educated group) seem to be less judgmental and want to see how a third year turns out.
2.  The non-alumni fans (the instant gratificati

Hiring a new coach right now is not the right move, it will only put Michigan behind another 3-4 years.  Rich is getting the type of players you need for his system, they only work in HIS system.  If you hire a new coach you have to cycle out the players Rich Rod recruited and bring in another crop of freshman that fit the new coaches system.  Stick with Rich Rod for another 3 ...(more)

Seconds, which school will it raid and steal from next?  Hey, how about another Big East school (Cincy should be on alert), that seemed to work for you in one of the two sports.  Your basketball team got back to the Tourney and is ranked in the pre-season top 25.  Football, well let's just say Dick Rod broke a lot of records at UM...records you don't wanna break.  I guess we'll ...(more)

I think Bo and Lloyd ran clean programs, but I'm not so sure about Rich Rodriguez. Still, the good folks in Ann Arbor should give him the benefit of the doubt. After all, our system is based on the presumption of innocence. I must say, however, that I take great delight in knowing that all those sanctimonious UM fans, who always accuse everyone else of recruiting violations and other forms of chea ...(more)

Anyone remember when RichRod first bolted for Ann Arbor??  It was hasty, there was malice, and he really was haunted by the mysterious disappearance of hundreds of files that were supposed to have been logged during RR's tenure at WVU.  And thus, there was "Shredgate".  Seems now that Rodriguez must be an extremist in "going green" and saving trees by recycling a ...(more)

After OSU shellacks Um again, this will be the perfect 'reason' for UM to send him packing - "Just couldn't beat OSU".  Harbaugh would be a fantastic get for UM, but I think he pissed-off the AD there a couple of years back with some slanderous comments about academics or something (can't recall exactly what it was).  If LSU loses this weekend, Les Miles might be effectively run out of t ...(more)

This is hard to believe that Mecheatagain would have not kept mandatory logs. I guess the NCAA will just have to take Rich Rod's word for it -- or should they believe the whistle blowers?  Naw, Rich wouldn't have shredded any of those logs --no way.  He wouldn't have held practice for longer than the NCAA allowed --naaaaww.

I wonder if Lloyd Carr was keeping logs?

If you want to know who the next scUm coach will be, just follow the president's limo to the Toledo airport.  Make sure you follow the right car, I am sure they will have about two or three identicle cars just to try and throw you off the trail.  Remember, this is all off the record and they will only be talking to the agents to see about possible coaches who are not under contract with ...(more)

Rich is just like the UK hiring of Gillispie. Get a coach that is hot, looks the part, cocky as can be, but in reality he can't handle real pressure from a real major program, had a completely different schedule than where he previously was and he comes in and completely flops.

Then to top all of it off, all you have is distractions and not winning the games you are supposed to.

The new A.D. at UofM should be on the phone with Jim Harbaugh and beg him to come back to Michigan.  Perfect time for the new A.D. to do it.  He didn't hire RichRod so he'd be a hero and he would be bringing in a former UofM player as the new head coach.  Harbaugh has turned Stanford around and he had less talent than RichRod had on the UofM roster.  Harbaugh has beaten US ...(more)

As a Badger fan, it's great fun to see Itty Bitty Blue struggling.  The sad thing is they're embarrassing the entire conference with this amateur foolishness.  Pull the plug and hire a real coach.

The program is a rogue program completely out of control. While the NCAA is too Big-10 beholden to ever hold a Big 10 team fully accountable, I'm guessing we may be headed for a 7-figure fine here, the largest ever.

His dog ate the practice logs.

Does anyone really believe the practice logs don't exist.  They certainly were there when players were called out by the coaches for not putting in extra time.

Michigan is holding to the company line of "...give RR time to get his players to run his system". OK fine. What do they expect as the end result? In seven seasons at WVU RR averaged 8-4 a season. At the very height of his "success" at WVU, RR's system looked identical to the current Michigan team. RR's system has always had difficulty with big, powerful opponents. Look at the ...(more)
