Stanford rides blowout win over USC to No. 14 as Trojans sink

NEW YORK -- After another humiliating loss, Southern California tumbled to its worst ranking since Pete Carroll's Trojans began their run as one of college football's best programs in 2002.

USC is No. 22 in the Associated Press Top 25 released Sunday, dropping 11 spots after losing 55-21 to Stanford. The Trojans have been ranked in 128 consecutive media polls dating to the start of the 2002 season, but never this low.

The Trojans haven't been ranked lower than No. 13 since October 2002.

Meanwhile, Stanford soared up the rankings to No. 14, its best showing since being No. 11 in the last regular-season poll of 2001.

Florida remained No. 1 and Alabama leapfrogged Texas into the No. 2 spot, one of only two small changes to the top 10.

The Gators received 36 first-place votes. Alabama received 14 first-place votes after its most convincing victory -- 31-3 at Mississippi State -- in more than a month.

Texas received 10 first-place votes. The Crimson Tide and Longhorns are separated by just five points.

The other three undefeated major college teams were next, with TCU at No. 4, Cincinnati at No. 5 and Boise State No. 6 for the second consecutive week.

The BCS standings had the same top six teams as the AP poll.

No. 7 Georgia Tech and No. 8 Pittsburgh also held their places. No. 9 Ohio State and No. 10 LSU flip-flopped for the only other change in the top 10.

For USC, the lopsided loss to Stanford marked the second time in the last three games the Trojans were handed the worst loss of the Carroll era. Oregon beat USC 47-20 in Eugene on Halloween night.

The latest embarrassment happened at the Coliseum, where USC has lost only two of its last 49 games -- both times to Stanford.

"This isn't what we grew up watching," USC freshman quarterback Matt Barkley said after the Stanford game.

Carroll's first USC team went 6-6. The Trojans then went 82-9 between 2002-08, winning at least a share of seven consecutive Pac-10 titles. Though USC has not been eliminated from Pac-10 title contention, it will be the Trojans' first season with more than two losses since 2001.

Only Texas with 153 consecutive poll appearances has a longer streak than USC. The Trojans have a week off before playing UCLA on Nov. 28.

Six teams, including USC, ranked between 11-20 last week lost, giving the middle of the rankings a new look.

No. 11 Oregon moved up three spots, No. 12 Oklahoma State jumped five and No. 13 Penn State gained six places.

Stanford made the biggest move up of all the ranked teams last week, gaining 11 spots.

Iowa held its spot at No. 15 and was followed by Virginia Tech, Wisconsin, Clemson, BYU and Oregon State, which moved into the rankings for the first time this season at No. 20.

Miami dropped nine spots to No. 21 and was followed by USC, Utah and Houston -- all of which lost Saturday.

No. 25 Rutgers also moved into the rankings for the first time this season, and the first time since the middle of the 2007 season.

Arizona and South Florida dropped out of the rankings after losses.

How in the world is Iowa ranked below both Penn State and Wisconsin (two teams they beat, and have an identical record as) in both the Coaches' and AP polls? Makes zero sense. They just lost to Ohio State by a field goal in OT, yet they're ranked seven spots behind the Buckeyes in one poll and six in the other. This is what's wrong with college football, right here. The human element and what the ...(more)

As time has gone by the number of AP voters has incresed as the quality of journalism in general and sports journalism in particluar has utterly deteriorated. In other words you have more voters who know less about college football than ever before. The digital age has contributed to this - and probably the lowering of academic standards. Just read a lot of the garbage on this website that passes ...(more)

The biggest joke about the poll is that there are 4 Big 10 teams ranked in the top 17. At least we will be spared of a Big 10 team playing in the title game and getting destroyed, I guess we will look for the Rose Bowl to see that. Oregon may score a 100 on Ohio St.

This team is still ranked after being blown out twice and beat by a team who did not win a game last year. The favoritism from the media is obvious. USC is overrated and will continue to be. Harbough had some words with Carrol after the game because Carrol can not handle being at the bottom of the ladder. There is no doubt that USC will be back in a few years but this year is rediculous to rank th ...(more)

How is Virginia Tech ranked? They haven't beaten anyone...they are horrible and don't bring up Miami because they are garbage and shouldn't be ranked either...

Having Penn State ranked so high is a complete joke.  Their out of conference schedule of Temple, Syracuse, Akron, and E Illinois is embarrassing.  Who have they beaten this year?  Northwestern and Minnesota?  Nice formula, beat two mediocre conference teams, lose to the two ranked opponents you play, and beat up on 4 cupcakes and get a #12 ranking and likely a major bowl.  ...(more)

Quality wins- top-10 Ohio State, top-30 Oregon State
Key losses- #71 Washington, #11 Oregon (by 23), #25 Stanford (by 24)

They may be better than their record, but getting stomped by the then-#25 team in the country means that you shouldn't be top-25. Their body of work simply doesn't support it.

USC is the best 3 loss team in the nation by a long shot.  Their loss at Stanford was a fluke and Stanford was just plain lucky.  They really deserve to be in a BCS bowl and frankly with their talent and Pete Carroll as their coach they really should be ranked  #2 or #3 yet.  I am shocked that they fell, with their performance against a tough team like Stanford, USC should ...(more)

Oh how the mighty have fallen. The fact that USC is ranked at all is soley on reputation. Transition year my a$$. Ten games into the season and this is the best defense USC can field? This is due to a drop off in talent and nothing more. Did ANY USC fans see this coming? A possible Emerald Bowl berth? Are you kidding me?

How can USC still be ranked after suffering their 3rd loss of the season by such a huge margin while North Carolina just beat their 2nd ranked team in three weeks (including Virginia Tech, and Miami) and still aren't in the top 25.  Just like USC they are 7-3 on the year with two of the loses coming to #7 Georgia Tech, and Flordia State.  The media kills me... No love for the Heels.

A bad team from a bad conference in the top 25?  Sweet non-conference schedule too:  Howard, Texas Southern, FIU?  AP is a joke.

USC's just getting the respect that Florida St. got and still gets for about the last 10 years even though they are and have been irrelevant. At least in USC's case this is 1 bad year or 3 bad games.

128 weeks equals approximately 2 1/2 years

Since 2002 would be in excess of 300 weeks.
