Huskies report: Getting inside

This Huskies' success story this season isn't just about the guard tandem of senior Justin Dentmon and freshman Isaiah Thomas. It's not just about senior power forward Jon Brockman.

Junior forward Quincy Pondexter, who seemingly never lived up to the massive hype that followed him from high school, has been critical to the Huskies' surge to the top of the Pac-10 standings.

Pondexter scored 20 points in UW's 103-84 rout of Oregon, and has averaged 18.0 over the current four-game stretch.

That's quite a change from the previous two seasons, where Pondexter often seemed lost, and certainly paled in comparison two his two former central California high school teammates, Stanford stars Brook and Robin Lopez.

"I did feel a lot of pressure on myself," Pondexter told the Seattle Times. "I found there were a lot of times when I would just be in my room and just wondering when it was ever going to be great here. Now I think it's turning around into that fairy tale, and I'm loving every minute of it."

Brockman said Pondexter has learned how to just play the game, and not stress over it so much.

"I think the biggest thing Quincy has done is taken the pressure off himself," Brockman said. "He's taken the whole NBA thing out of the deal and just said to himself, 'Forget about that. I'm going to think about the team. I'm going to think about our season instead of worrying about my future.'

"He was putting too much pressure on himself. No one's going to come out and score 30 points and have 20 rebounds every single game."

Pondexter has started all 25 games and is averaging 11.1 points and 5.6 rebounds.

Brockman said Pondexter has become more team-oriented and less concerned with scoring.

"Freshmen come in and just want to score, score, score," Brockman said. "But this season, Quincy has come in and concentrated more on defense and rebounding and passing, and it's paying off."

Huge win for the Dawgs last night!  Now they are tied for 2nd at 5-5, playing ASU at 6-4 tomorrow.  AU is playing WA St, who I think will beat AU.  Not sure who Cal plays, but we play Cal next Thursday.  If we beat ASU at home, and can manage to pull out a road win at Cal, we could be sitting on top of the Pac 10 with momentum.  If we can manage a few road wins and maintai ...(more)

Alright, the WSU game restored hope for me for this season. Now here's my take for what we need and what we can live with to hopefully make the tourney again. Obviously, we need to sweep the Arizona schools at home. If we lose, that makes the mostly great play of  this week go to waste. We need to cream Stanford. Again.  Cal would be a huge win on the road, but, being realistic, it doesn ...(more)

It never used to matter when a Pac-10 team beat a mid-major, or in this case a no-major but this year's different.  Thank you Washington for making quick work of Seattle.  After that beat down they laid on Oregon State the Pac couldn't afford for you to even let them in the game and you didn't.  A couple years from now this season will just be a bad memory for all Pac-10 fans but fo ...(more)

As a Coug Fan, Wondering how you UW fans are feeling about the game tomorrow. I predict it will be a close game but Cougs pull it out becasue of UW lack of any inside presence.

The Huskies are poorly coached. They can't get a shot off when they need it. Out of a timeout they can't inbound the ball. Why in the F is MBA even in the game late in an offensive situation out of a timeout? He is worthless on the offensive end of the floor.

Over the years, Romar has failed to establish an offensive system that they can rely on to get them a good shot late in the game

They are terrible on the road.  Tonight they let the Bruins go the length of the court in 6 seconds and UW loses to a weak UCLA team.  It is a team loss.  However, there are a couple players who need to step up.  Gaddy as good as he could be needs to come off the bench and let Overton start.  When you are a starting guard you need to score more than 4 points a game plus Ov ...(more)

There are several "Vote-Offs" going on over on the NCAA Basketball Message Board. We want to make sure everyone who wants to , has a change to join in the fun.

If you aren't familiar with the game here are the rules:

1. Each team starts with 10 votes.
2. Every person gets to vote once per day and a vote is 1 (+) for one team and 1 (-) for another team. ...(more)

Anyone watching right now can't deny it. We straight up stink. A ranked team should not be down by 15 to ASU. Only three assists to 7 TO's. are you kidding me?

this is so idiotic, the Pac-10 has a worse tv contract than the WCC, I thought the new commish was going to step in and do something about it, he made the football schedule better so at least 3 of the 5 Pac-10 games got on Saturday, allowing 1 out of 5 is idiotic, I know you guys love the Dawgs and will root now matter what but if we can get noone from WSU, UW, Oregon and Oregon State to go in a b ...(more)

By watching the way these first games have went it looks like they need to get back to some basics. I guess that is why teams play schedules they do so they can see what they need to work on. You can see they really are missing that big force down on the blocks, so they don't have that rebounding edge like last year. Free throws are once again issues early in the season and they don't look like th ...(more)

Granted, it's only 4 games against mid-majors, but he's playing really great; not just scoring, but doing the little things like playing good defense, crashing the offensive glass, making his FT's... he really seems to be stepping up as a senior, reminds me a lot of B-Roy his senior year.  I hope he can keep it up.

Findlay Prep recruited Kanter pretty hard to come play for their prep academy.

Check out the video talking about his recruitment.

We'll get a much truer sense of where this dawg team stands tonight with a road test against a Big 12 team (albeit one that hasn't been tested much either) that has a lot of balance.  This is still a pretty young team, so it will be a challenge to play up-tempo but not out of control in the hostile environment.  With the bad start the Pac 10 has gotten off to, these games are even more i ...(more)
