Orange report: Getting inside

Syracuse is one of the hottest teams in college basketball, but Jim Boeheim's team never seems to do things the easy way.

The Orange rarely dominates a game from start to finish. It often falls behind or gets itself involved in a much closer game than it should be involved in before coming through at the finish.

Two of its last three games entering the second week in February fit that description. It finished January barely escaping defeat against a one-win DePaul squad that led the Orange most of the way, and trailed in the second half against Cincinnati on Feb. 7 before rallying for the victory on the road.

But the Cincinnati win was also one of the most impressive of the season, because of who wasn't on the court when it really happened.

Wes Johnson spent much of the game in foul trouble, and picked up his fourth with 12:40 to play. At the time, the Orange trailed 46-43, a deficit that increased to six points at 49-43 with a Bearcat 3-pointer on the next possession.

After that, Syracuse dominated, finishing the game on a 28-5 run. With Johnson on the bench, it was his backup Kris Joseph (17 points) who was instrumental in the victory.

That, coupled with a Villanova loss to Georgetown, gave Syracuse a percentage-points lead in the Big East standings. Both teams are tied in the loss column, and the Wildcats come to Syracuse on Feb. 27 for a game that could decide the regular-season title and the top seed in the conference tournament.

The schedule has been hard all along, but these last 7 games get tough because what is at stake.

Feb 10 Connecticut --  Tough because it is UConn, even in a down year, but mostly because they are a bubble team right now.
Feb 14 Louisville   --  A bubble team that needs the wins
Feb 18 @Georgetown -- GTown wants revenge.  The good news is

Syracuse should be either #1 or #2 in ALL the polls, with UK as #3. They are playing super great! That said, come tourney time, I believe UK will beat either one! Kansas or Syracuse.
Does anyone have any ideas as to whay has happened to UNC? They probably won't even make the tournment. If & when UK plays Syracuse, it should be a  "barnburner" Lets hope this happens in the N

Enes Kantor a 5 star recruit according to scout.com, is considering Syracuse.  He is in the 2010 class.  I wonder what the chances are of Syracuse landing this kid.

Anybody have news on Josh Selby also?

CINCINNATI -- Jim Boeheim was in his customary position at the postgame podium. Right fist pressed against right cheek. Voice flat. Glee cleverly concealed beneath his permagloom exterior.

Someone asked the funereal Syracuse coach how much fun he's having in this unexpected 23-1 season.

"I've never described my job as having fun," Boeheim droned.

Of course not. ...(more)

After Kentucky's loss to South Carolina I think its pretty clear who has the best resume in the country. Up to this point they have the best body of work and are most deserving to get the # 1 ranking in next weeks polls. Normally a team will not jump the 2nd and 3rd teams in the country to take over that spot if those teams haven't lost that week but this time it should happen...

All CUSE fans should watch the STUPID preview video on cbssports right now.  In it, he claims the SU is not in the same league this season as UK and KU!!!!!  I mean, REALLY!  What does this team have to do to prove they are legit this year.  Do they need to drop 100 on UCONN?  Do they need to win every game for the rest of the season.  If you don't lose games, and you ...(more)

'Cuse is going to need Wes to step up come Big East/NCAA Tourney time if they plan on doing anything.  He's a very unselfish player but eventually they are going to need him to be the 2010 version of Carmelo Anthony!!!!  Even though this is his first season playing, the Orange will look to him to lead them come tourney time!  Hopefully Boeheim is grooming to be as such!

(POLL) Good rivalry matchup. Will Conncecticut play like they're usually known to play and pull out a much needed win? Or will Syracuse dominate like they've usually been doing (excluding DePaul)? Thoughts?

I believe if the Cuse doesn't win out they are going to get snubbed by the media, and possibly the tournament selectors. I'm not saying to win the Big East Tournament, just regular season. I do agree with most people that our schedule is by far the hardest in the nation, but the opponents that we did face are very inconsistent right now. UNC, Cal, Florida, probably our best out of conference win w ...(more)

Anyone here old enough to remember Manley?

Anyone remember how visiting teams were treated by the "fans"?

Anyone ever throw a coin at a visiting bench?

As this season rolls on, the more i watch this Orange team the more i am starting to fall in love with Kris Joseph. Every time he enters the game it seems he brings some new energy to the game. The improvement that he has made from last year is substantial and i can only hope he continues to keep getting better. If he does he will be a top player in the Big East as he gets into his Junior and ...(more)

The count is now 1 and 1.

Would be ironic if Albany wins the America Least conference and gets into the NCAA and Sorry Excuse goes to the NIT again due to its weak cupcake schedule.

It was almost impossible to watch.  In fact most of the game was unwatchable!  I was forced to watch the bad Fantastic Four movie.  Syracuse needs to start playing in the first half or they are going to get bit in the NCAA's.
